1Indictment against

( : :: village

’ CRITICISMS of Whalley by the judges of the Lan cashire Best-Kept Village competition were an indict ment against the villagers,' said Coun. Peter Lancas ter at a parish- council meeting. The judges were par

ticularly scathing about the amount of litter.around the bus station, where the. toilets were described as “disgusting.” The judges conceded1

that Whalley was a dif ficult place to keep tidy because of the many vis itors, and.it was felt that they could be responsible for much of the litter. There was praise from

the judges for the Sands and Square area, however, and for the Abbey and the village churches. The councillors. agreed

that the judges’ comments were justified. -

Lane, which would be used for access to the house, did not measure up to today’s planning standards. Tt was not wide enough-and had no footpath; and street lighting. .And the inspector was

not convinced that another- house on the farm was necessary, because Mr Geldard • Snr.-'could be quickly summoned by tele phone.

.

■■■5 The inspector hoped, however, that planning applications fo r other nearby sites, which would not be subject to such objections, might be more successful with the council.
