one of the town’s busiest thoroughfares,
the BSG has become a firm favourite with the motoring public over a number of years. Now it’s all over . . . The
BSG has gone, but the solid links forged over the years remain to continue apace in new premises — the Jubilee Garage.

The reason for the demise
of the BSG could have been a tragic one — for it was almost strangled out of existence by motorway roadworks scheduled for the area. In the event it was a
happy occasion; a jubilee event, in fact. It was coinci- dence which determined that the new garage came into being in the time of the Royal Jubilee. It also came in time to save the business, so either way the title is eminently suitable.

site was a critical one. The principals did not want to move too far away from their successful location. The t ie s must not be completely severed with the area. It took some time, but

Barracks Station Garage Ltd) was incorporated in November, 1964, and. began trading in March, 1965. At that time it operated the BSG and a “ s a te l l i te ” garage, known as Barracks Garage. Both were directly affected by road develop ment.

retailing of cars both old and new — and included the FIAT dealership; stores and workshops and the main adminstrative offices of the company. The major petrol gallonage was also sold from this site, because of its very advantageous situation on a main traffic artery of the town.

also encroach upon land bought by the firm for extensions. The company was also
advised by the planners that building a garage on the remaining land would not be desirable and that access to the proposed new road would not be granted. In April 1972, the Depart
Road stopped this develop ment. I t subsequently became obvious to the owners that when Padiham Road was widened there would not be sufficient room to redevelop on the site. Ot h e r moves th e n

With a growing business enbracing car sales and repairs, and a pressing need not only for consolidation but also expan sion, efforts were made to acquire a lease of the single storey section of Junction Mill as a stop-gap solution — with the fear that this build ing might also fall in the p a th of the proposed motorway. Negotiations were unsuc
cessful and the vandals got to work on the mill . . . The company was back to square one. They had to go, sooner or
later — from a site well located geographically, with land available for expansion and the name of the business well established.

road acting as a main traffic feed — come motorway, Westgate link or what have you. The Jubilee retains an
affinity with the old BSG by blending old-fashioned attention to detail, and the wishes of the customer, with up-to-the-minute facilities. It also retains a little of the flavour of the old in its company tit le of BSG Motors Limited . . . a sign that the management is proud of its past tradition and is sure that the motoring public has faith in its reputa tion. Custom-built down to the
last door and window, the new Jubilee Garage is right “en route” for many Burnley motorists — those living in the west end of town and
