Flu closes hospital ward

RUMOURS of a "killer flu" outbreak at Clitheroe Hospi tal have been denied by a hospital spokesman. No new patients are being

admitted to a ward at the hospital. But the spokesman said this had been done on the advice of a consultant because of a number of cases

of flu. He said that there had

been deaths in the ward in recent weeks but it was difficult to assess how far flu contributed to them. One patient who died in the ward was 102, another was 99. The spokesman said:

“There is no epidemic of flu at the hospital and I would not want relatives to become alarmed. We shall start admitting patients to the ward again when we are satisfied that the precau tions have been successful.”

Pool

A PLAN to turn a stone- built barn into a swimming pool has been approved by the Ribble Valley Council’s D e v e l o p m e n t Sub- Committee. The committee was told that Mr E. Ingham, of Hammond Drive, Read, intended to build a 30ft x 14ft pool in the barn as well as changing facilities. Approval was granted subject to five conditions, involving safeguards against pollution, using the pool only for private purposes and landscaping.

River poacher fined £350
