EASTER SERVICES
EASTER MESSAGE A few years ago, had you attended the Easter Vigil
ceremony In a Catholic Church on the evening of Holy Saturday (the day before Easter Sunday), near the beginning of the ceremony you would have seen the priest or deacon enter the Church with the lighted Paschal Candle In his hands and you would have heard him sing three times the words “Lumen Christl," "The light of Christ,” and the congregation would have sung In reply "Deo gratis,” “Thanks be to God.” Nowadays this same ceremony still takes place but the words are now said or sung in English and the music provided does not have quite the same elec trifying effect as the Latin had.
Easter is a celebration by Christians of Christ’s
Resurrection — His rising again to 'life after death, signifying His triumph over sin and guaranteeing to those who believe in Him the eternal life of union with God in heaven after death. The Paschal Candle used In the ceremony mentioned above represents Christ Himself and Its flame His risen life. In the next part of that ceremony all the members of the congregation light their candles from that Paschal Candle; and each one’s flame represents his or her share in Christ’s life, the life of grace He gives to those who profess their faith in Him.
Let us, then, remember this Easter that despite the
pressures and hardships of this life, there Is a life to come when we are promised union with God, If we but now place our faith in the risen Christ. May the joy of Christ’s Resurrection from the dead enter into our lives and through us may come to those who do not as yet know Christ.
