ORGANIST of Beverley Minster, Mr Alan Spedding opened Saturday’s recital for Clitheroe Parish Church Organ Soc iety with a Toccata Giocosa by William Matthias. He followed this techni
cally difficult work with Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in A minor and Johann Walth- er’s Partita on “Jesu, meine Freude.” One of the most effective
pieces was Mendelssohn’s Prelude and Fugue in C minor. The organ’s flute stops were shown to advan tage in four short pieces for mechanical organs, by Haydn, and Alain’s “Le jardin suspendu” made use of the instrument’s quiet tones. The climax of the prog
ramme was a stunning performance of Joseph Bonnet’s “Variations de concert,” a work which requires the feet to play four-note chords.
Mr Donald Hartley,
organist of Whalley Parish Chur h, introduced Mr Spedding, who played another short piece for mechanical organ by Haydn as an encore.
p e r fo rm in g an as yet unnamed play for three days in November. The decisions were taken at the group’s annual meet-
ing at Clitheroe Parish Hall, attended by about 50 of the total membership of 180.
The November play,
produced by Mrs Barbara Taylor, will take place on the 16th, 17th and 18th.
In “ Calamity Jane” the
group has picked a sure-fire success because it includes many hit songs including “ The Deadwood Stage,” “Secret Love” and “Black Hills of Dakota”.
It was decided to hold the
annual enrolment evening on June 13th at the Parish Hall. This is the occasion when new members can join — although the group is eager to have only those who want to play an active role. Principal officers re
elected were: Producer — Miss Hilda Basnett; chair man — the Rev. J. C. Hudson; Joint secretaries — Mr Richard Dinnis and Mrs Catherine Whitham; Trea su re r — Mrs Lavinia Fenton; Musical director — Mr John Bowness. Mr David Scott becomes
stage manager in place of Mr Keith Lavender, who has taken over lighting respon sibilities from Mr Geoff Whitham. The committee was re
elected en bloc apart from t h r e e memb e r s who r e s i g n e d — Mr Ro y Oldroyd, Mrs Elizabeth Lavender and Mr Whitham. Their places were taken by Mr Mike Brookes, Mr Arthur Micklewright and Mrs Diane Eatough. The new post of chorus
master was filled by Mr Jim Parker. Press officer is Mr John Clayton.

A PATE and wine evening organised by the Clitheroe area committee for Cancer Research raised more than £600.
It was held at Waddington Hall, a private nursing home, where committee chairman Miss Margaret Vinten is matron.
, .___ About 150 people attended, including special guests the Mayor and Mayoress of ■ . . . ,
Clitheroe, Coun and Mrs Bob Ainsworth, and Ribble Valley Mayor and Mayoress Coun. and Mrs Edward Newhouse, who were there in an unofficial capacity. The main money-spinner of the evening was a bumper draw with 10 fine prizes,
tickets being drawn by Mrs Ainsworth.
First prize of £50 went to Waddington grocer Mr John Herd, second prize of £25 to Mrs H. Tasker, of West Bradford, and third prize of crystal goblets to Mrs Kathleen
, .
Bithell, of Clitheroe. Prizes were donated, by friends of the committee. A cake stall and tombola helped boost takings and a Black Forest gateau made by
Mrs Harrison, of Waddington, was raffled for £10. After the event, committee secretary Mrs Helen Harrison said: We d like to thank
everyone for their support — raising over £600 was a tremendous effort. The committee has now raised about £1,000 with three efforts since it was formed

parking ban ‘long
overdue’ A WEEKEND and holiday parking ban has been imposed on a section of road b r a n d e d “ e x t r eme l y dangerous.” The ban applies to both
sides of the Waddington- C l i t h e r o e road from Brungerley Park gates over Brungerley Bridge to the entrance to Waddow Hall. It applies between 10 a.m.
and 8 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. And the ban has been I

welcomed by Coun. John | Walmsley, of Waddington, who has been pressing for | restrictions on this stretch. He said: “At weekends I
when there are plenty of cars parked near the bridge this part of the road is extre-1 mely dangerous. "You get these mad head I
drivers racing along, and with cars parked on both sides of the road there is | only a narrow space left. “It’s a wonder that no one I
has been hurt so far and I’m thankful the ban has been introduced before this ] happened.” In imposing the ban,
Lancashire County Council I has made a small concession to anglers and walkers who tend to leave cars in the unofficial “lay-by” where the r o a d wid en s on the Waddington side of the bridge. This area — about 70 yards long — has been left | free from restrictions. Said Coun. Walmsley: I
“Obviously people will want to park round the bridge at weekends and holiday times. But you can’t please every body and I think stopping accidents must be the | number one priority.”
