Knew nothing of accident
A MOTOR-CYCLIST who c ou ld n ot rem em b e r anything about a crash in which he was involved was fined £10 at Clitheroe for driving without due care and attention.
Robert Ingham (23), of
N ew la n d s A v e n u e , Clitheroe, pleaded not guilty.

(defending) submitted that it would be improper to convict on the prosecution’s evidence, as there was no proof of speed, and damage to the machine had been only superficial.

WHEN the Milk Marketing Board, Thames Ditton, was fined £10 at Clitheroe because a diesel lorry emit- ted excessive exhaust smoke, Miss Pat Mercer (defending) told the bench that an automatic choke had jammed. ■
Miss Mercer said the
Board’s vehicles were well maintained and when this one was re-started after being stopped by the police the choke operated right away and the excessive discharge of smoke ceased.

An exercise in keeping fit
RIBBLE VALLEY people anxious to “fight flab” could soon be taking part in an “Early Bird” fitness course. The Ribble Valley Sports
Council, in conjunction with the Ribble Valley Adult Education service and the Ribblesdale Pool, are hoping to start a 10-week course in the near future. The decision to start the
course followed a meeting last week at Ribblesdale School attended by about 100 people, mainly in the 30 to 50 age groups. Three experts spoke
about the relationship between health and fitness and the benefits of exercise and cardiac rehabilitation. They were Dr John White
and Dr Bruce Davies, of the human performance laborat ory at Salford University, and Dr Rod Goodfellow, of the North West Road Cycle Club and former British Champion long distance cyclist. Dr Goodfellow, in an illus
trated lecture, showed how exercise was beneficial, even after a heart attack. But it had to be done regu larly — at least three times a week. In the fight for fitness, Dr
Goodfellow emphasised the importance of eating the right food, and stressed the need to follow a low fat diet. Mr Jeff Smith, the Adult
Education principal, pres ided and Mrs Mary Bridge, chairman of the Sports
Council introduced the speakers. The “Early Bird” course
devised by the Sports Coun cil — advocates a daily prog ramme of exercise. Locally this would include swimming at the Ribbles dale Pool on two days and attending “dry” exercise on three days at Ribblesdale School.
An advertisement will
shortly be placed in the Advertiser and Times to assess how many people would be interested in join ing a course, and a decision will then be taken on whether or not to run one.
No licence
FOR using an unlicensed car in Broad Lane, Whalley, Paula Bolton (32) of Billing- ton Gardens, Billington, was fined £10 at Clitheroe. She was ordered to pay £12.50 back duty. She was fined a further £5 for not having a test certificate.
In a letter to the court she
said her licence application had been returned from Swansea because it was incorrectly filled in. She had used the car on only one day. It had since passed an MoT test.

time to spare. As the festival grows in
popularity and becomes more widely known, visitors from all parts are being attracted to the town. This created an
unusual task for festival secretary Miss Marie Cullen, who was asked to find weekend accommo dation for a party of 24 from South Wales . . . all under one roof.
Accommodation will be
one of the problems to be faced if, as hoped, the national drama festival finals are to be staged in the Ribble Valley in 1980, for an influx of visitors from all parts of the country and even from overseas could be antici pated.
This year’s national
finals will be held in Colwyn Bay and the following year it will be. the turn of Fleetwood,
but for 1980 there is every indication that Clitheroe would be favourably considered, if council backing could be assured.
Next week’s festival
promises a programme of r ich variety. Author Norman Robbins has set Monday’s play, “Pull the other one,” in a working class home in neighbour- in g N e ls on , and by contrast Friday’s action in “The Cell” takes place in a nunnery.
On S a tu rd a y , last
year’s national champ ions, the. Bridgend Castle Players, offer “All my sons” by controversial American writer Arthur Miller. On Thursday, last
year’s winners, Formby Theatre Club, present “ Ladies in retirement,” acclaimed “ play of the year” in 1939.
There should be plenty
of local support for the Whalley Church Players i n “ The S ou n d o f Murder” on Wednesday, and a lot of entertain ment in Lancaster Foot lights Club’s production of the Feydeau farce “A flea in her ear.”
For the first time, the
festival has received a grant from the North West Arts Association of £50 towards its costs. The list of patrons is longer than ever before in the fe s t iv a l ’ s 14-year
history and generous financial support has also been received, from a number of local firms. Providing the bouquets
and the brickbats will be ad judicator and arts director Phillip Bromley, who is rega rd ed in Nottingham as doing for the city arts centre what Brian Clough has done for Nottingham Forest. The festival will be offi
cially opened on Monday night by Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Edward N ew h o u s e . Am on g visitors at Saturday’s finals will be the chair man o f the National Drama Festivals Associa tion, Mr Jack Baker, and Mrs Baker, of Sheffield.
