THE funeral took place at Sabden Baptist Chapel yesterday of one of the village’s most respected residents, Mr Harry Johnson, who died at his home


in Whalley Road Mr Johnson (77) was born


at Goodshaw Fold, near Rawtenstall, but his family moved to Sabden when he was seven.


After leaving school at 12,


he began work at Sabden’s former print works, where

he stayed until it closed down in the 1930s. During this period he


studied in his spare time at colleges in Padiham and Burnley, eventually gaining qualifications as a chemist. After the print works


closure, Mr Johnson was employed as a driver of lorries and buses by various firms, including Ribble Motors. At the outbreak of the


second worldwar he became a maintenance fitter at R ib b l e ’s g a r a g e s in Clitheroe — a job which he kept until his retirement 12 years ago. In 1952 Mr Johnson


started a small business at his home making filter cloths for lorry and bus engines, with £100 he saved by giving up smoking. His wife Margery, who


died five years ago, helped with the business. It later expanded and Mr Johnson bought a house next door as a workshop and office. The business provided

married daughter, Mrs Marie Urry, who lives in Sabden, The funeral service was


conducted by the Rev. Brian Stubbs, prior to cremation at Burnley.

Group. The demonstration, at the


home of Mrs Anne Coupe, The Gardens, Hurst Green, was given by Mrs Joan Kirkham and group leader Mrs Mary Kay. One of the arrangements


was later sent to a member who gave birth to a boy on the previous night. The group, formed a


month ago to enable young wives and mothers to meet socially, is making good progress. Members are to meet
