NEWTON villager Mr Reggie Baines and his wife Phoebe sat by the fireside of their cosy cottage home yesterday and celebrated 50 years of happily married life.
Their golden wedding was a
quiet affair, with just mem bers of the family and a few friends dropping'in to wish them all the best, but for the couple it was the ideal way of celebrating the happy times they have shared.
They have lived in Newton
virtually all their married life and for most of that time Mr Baines ran a private road haulage business from a gar age in the village. Mr Baines (72) first met his
wife when he was an eight- year-old pupil of Dale Head Primary School. The couple were married at St James’s Church in the village and soon afterwards moved to Newton. In 1933 — wi th the

depression making jobs- almost impossible to find. —; Mr Baines “took the bull by the horns” and purchased a lorry to start his own busi ness. It was quite a gamble, for
his previous work had been as a farm hand and his know ledge of the road haulage trade was virtually nil. But he gained a contract
fr^m the Milk Marketing Board to deliver and collect milk churns in various parts of the Ribble Valley, and the business survived. Mrs Baines (74) was . kept
busy at home, looking after her three sons — John, Robert, and Stanley — and daughters Alice and Ellen. Now the couple have time
to take life easy and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Newton. Mr Baines retired seven
years ago, leaving son John and his wife to carry on the business, and nowadays occupies himself making household objects out of wood and other materials. Mrs Baines enjoys reading
good books, and watching: her, favourite television prog ramme — Mastermind. The couple are never short
of company, for their family live within easy driving dis tance of Newton and regularly pop in to see them. Son Robert, who is mar
ried, is a farmer in Slaidburn, and Alice and Ellen, who are also both married, live in Clitheroe.

WHALLEY WOMAN HONOURED
THREE months after moving to Whalley, Mrs Marjory Maw, of Abbey Fields, has received the MBE in the New Year’s Honours, in recogni tion of her long service of. voluntary work with the Women’s Maintenance Coun cil at Edinburgh Royal Infir mary. A Lancashire lass — born in
Bury and brought up in Black pool — Mrs Maw, a young- looking 74, has lived in Edin burgh since 1930. Recently, however, she decided to move to Whalley to be nearer her family. One son, Dr Michael Maw,
lives at Clerk Hill, Whalley, and practises in Padiham. His . .wife, Sheila, is a former chair man of Padiham UDC, and they have a son; Richard (21), and two daughters, Alison (19) and Fiona (17). The other son, Julian, is a
civil engineer, living in Lon don with his wife Ismay and four children aged between 6
and 13. Mrs Maw’s late husband,
Henry, was secretary and tre asurer at Edinburgh Royal. He died in 1942, the year he was awarded the OBE. The fact that; he. was not suffi ciently well to receive his award in person has made Mrs Maw determined she will be
. going to Buckingham Palace for hers. Conne c t e d wi th the
Women’s. Maintenance Coun cil since it started in 1938, Mrs Maw was secretary from 1948.

. The council was formed to help with the general mainte nance of the hospital when it was a voluntary institution. Over the years it grew tre mendously,-, providing such things as
two.shops, a can teen, snack bar for the nurses, a work room and play-room for the children of ante-natal patients and an information centre. There were about 400 vol unteers working on a rota sys- . tern, .and Mrs Maw herself
