“PUT your feet up, Dr Brow n !” T h a t ’s the advice popular Whalley practitioner Dr Charles Brown is taking in 1976. F o r S c o t s- b o r n .Dr Brown, who has been in the village for 30 years, is taking down .his plate, due to ill health.
. In practice on his own, Dr
Brown covered a scattered 10- \ mile; area from Chatburn'- to Mellor, and from Sabden to Dutton. Now his patients must, choose another doctor near to them. When Dr Brown moved to
Whalley, the population was only about 2;000 — half of’
■what it is now — and more 1 like one big family. ' .■ He remembers the great
fun they all had at the tennis : parties at the club in Mitton Road. Apart from playing ten-
•.nis, Dr Brown enjoyed fish- ing, one hobby he could well take up again. •
‘ 4 Whalley has chano-pd con DR. BROWN relaxes by the fountain, in his pleasant garden £ takes advice and retires!
siderably: during his years there, but-the'changes in the medical profession have been even greater. ; Although everything now is ,
geared towards efficiency', Di- Brown thinks that many patients are inclined to malinger more and not pull their weight.
• The Croft, Dr Brown’s
home in Whailey,'. has been the. traditional doctor’s house since 1883,' and he intends to go on living there. ■ Since he came to the village, he has been Treasury Medical Officer to employees of the Post Office in Whalley, and was police: surgeon, for Clitheroe and Whalley in the fifties and sixties.
1 Dr. Brown has had an inter-
esting life as a physician and surgeon, particularly during- the war years, when he was in - the thick of things.
Born in Greenock, Dr
Brown graduated from Glas gow University in 1939. Shortly after war broke out he joined the rR A MG, going to -
France- with the 1st Infantry Division.' - After being evacuated from Dunkirk, he was appointed senior medical officer for North Lincolnshire, still attached to the Army.
In 1942 he went to North
Africa' with the 1st Armoured Division, seeing service from Alamein to Tunis.
In 1945 he was in Italy,
commanding the 55th Field Dressing Station, and towards the end of the war, became Deputy Assistant Director of Medical Services, covering an area, from Trieste to. near Venice. Dr Brown and his Scottish-
born wife Catriona, have four daughters, Fiona, Charlotte and Catriona (Katy); all mar ried,. and a sot; Charles Fer guson. ■ ■ There are six young grand
sons to keep -Dr and .-Mrs Brown fully occupied .v . and' they still hope they might be b le s s e d with a grand daughter.
