PROPOSALS for the change of use of buildings at the rear of the Swan and Royal Hotel, Clitheroe, to shop units will be discussed by the Ribble Val ley Council’s Development Sub-Committee to night. Applicant is Mr E. Trueman and the scheme includes land scaping of an existing yard area.

Court, William Taylor (34), of no fixed address, was said to have , told Blackburn police that he had received £3 for the candlesticks at Blackpool. As well as admitting steal

ing the candlesticks, worth £10, Taylor pleaded guilty to obtaining £8.73 by means of a forged Giro cheque, and asked for nine other offences to be taken into consideration. Mr J. Lumley, defending,

said that if Taylor was given his freedom, he would be able to find work at Blackpool. The magistrates remanded

Gisburn memorial window unveiled

A STAINED glass window was dedicated at St Mary’s Church, Gisburn, on Sunday in memory of the late Mr J. R; Hindley, of Gisburne Park. The window was unveiled by the Dean of Lichfield, and former Bishop of Burnley, the Rt Rev. G. Holderness.

The window, commissioned

by Mrs Alicia Hindley, mea sures 8ft by 6ft and replaces a plain glass one in the north aisle of the church. Designed and executed by

Mr Joseph Fisher, the window is intended to be an acknow ledgement of Mr Hindley’s Christian beliefs, his love of family and keen interest and affection' towards animals. Its focal point is the giving

of the sacrament and at the centre is the cross of Calvary, dominated by another cross which is symbolic of Christ’s triumph over the forces of evil. In one corner is depicted a

family group and another panel shows a jockey riding a horse. On the window are written the words “Lo I am with you always for we all live in the shadow of the cross”. The service was conducted

by the Vicar, Canon S. A. Selby, and the lesson was read by Mr J. J. Hindley. Mr P. Peel was at the organ.

Helping ^ t h e

sailors

A GLITTERING Christmas tree and. plenty of mince pies will give Whalley Abbey a distinctly festive atmosphere for Tuesday’s fund-raising event by the Whalley Circle of the King George’s Fund for Sailors. The annual event — a brin-

g-and-buy coffee morning and afternoon tea — has some thing for everybody. There will be a wide variety of stalls, including cake, fancy goods, craft and plants, and a tom bola should help to boost takings. This is the 18th such fund

raising effort by the Whalley Circle, which has handed over more than £3,100 to the cent ral body since its inception. L a s t y e a r alone about

£360,000 was distributed by the organisation to elderly sailors and the families of those who have perished at sea. Money has also been pro vided to support rehabilitation c en tre s and make grants towards scholarships. One person at Tuesday's

function will be the Whalley Circle’s recently-appointed chairman, Mrs Hazel Rogers, of “Highcroft,” Painter Wood, Billington. Mrs Rogers took over from retiring chairman, Miss Kathleen Sharpies, who held the office for many years.
