YOUTH and speed often go hand in hand as far as competition swimming is
concerned. And that was just the case
at Clitheroe Dolphins Swim ming Club’s annual gala when the junior champions,. Susan Rowland and Stephen Pym, outswam the senior champ- . ions for the 100 metres prizes. The gala was the second to
be held by the club since its formation and two years ago numerous club records were'
broken. Special awards were given
to club captains Susan and Tony Bush and to the most improved swimmer, John Gladwin.
the competitors are the Mayor and Mayoress of Clitheroe, Coun. and Mrs Leo Wells, who presented the prizes. The gala took place at the Ribbles-

GLASS FOUND IN. FRUIT TARTS
TWO fruit tarts bought at a former confectionery shop each contained a fragment of glass, Mr J. Campbell, pro secuting for the Ribble Valley Council, told the town’s magistrates. Mrs Joan Helm, of Bawd-
lands, Clitheroe, who admit ted selling the tarts, was fined £10 on each of two sum monses. She was ordered to pay an advocate’s fee of £10. For Mrs Helm, Mr Barry
Dearing asked the magis trates to accept that the frag ments did riot get there through negligence or carel essness. No one could say what was the exact cause, but plate glass chipped easily and it was quite possible that the glass had fallen on to the tarts from the shelf above. Mr Campbell said an anal
yst’s report showed that the fragments were similar to glass used for shelves.

Ex-Postmaster lets cat out of the bag V
THE best-kept secret of the Second World War was “leaked” to Clitheroe Probus Club members by former Clitheroe head postmaster Mr Walter McColl, who spent six years with the hush-hush unit codenamed
“ULTRA.”

The blanket of secrecy cov And Mr McColl, who was a '
signalman with ULTRA, told the 75 Probus members that many war histories would now need some revision in the light of the book’s disclosures. The unit was set up in

a computer which they linked to ENIGMA and from early 1940 — when Mr McColl joined ULTRA — to the end of the war they read all enemy signals in Europe and the Far
East. Germany had provided
Japan with ENIGMA and thanks to ULTRA the Ameri can and Australian allies were able to read high-grade “ u n b r e a k a b l e ” enemy
cyphers. Hitler's personal directive
to his Commanders in Chief “Eliminate and occupy Eng l a n d ” was decoded by ULTRA and during the battle of Alamein Alexander and Montgomery knew precisely what Rommell would do. In the Battle of the Atlantic
the pinpointing of U-boats and their supply ships through ULTRA was such that by 1943 that menace was over. The unit also provided crucial information for the allies as D-Day approached, including the knowledge that the Ger mans were convinced the invasion would, be in the Calais area. Water on — Any
time now
LOCAL footballers using the changing facilities at Lit- tlemoor should soon be able to have a wash af ter their
games. At the start of last season
the Ribble Valley Council erected two pre-fabricated changing rooms and a shower block at the Whalley Road end of the pitches after a storm of protest from local clubs over the lack of facilities. But the showers have never
worked and only on a few occasions have there been any washing facilities at all. Ac c o r d i n g to P a r k s
