— Eric, 17, put his side in the lead with an easy goal after Hanvey had done the pre paratory work by taking the ball to the by-line and pulling it into the centre. And with McLean finding plenty of room, the visitors gradually got on top. After the interval Low

Moor moved Humphreys into midfield and eventually gained the ascendancy, but bad shooting, and good defensive work by Ribblesdale, pre vented them from equalising. In the last minute, Dean

received the ball on the edge of the area and beat two men. His shot hit an opponent and the ball went to Humphreys who headed in the equaliser to produce a fair result in a game that was played largely in midfield. L ow M o o t C l u b :

Harwood’s suggestion is for

Henthorn Utd 2, Hurst Green 8.

AFTER Henthom had taken an early 2-0 lead, lack of experience caused them to give away silly goals and the final score does not do them

justice. Bishop and Conti opened the scor

ing and both missed equally good chances before Hurst Green pulled one back with-a fine diving header by Wilkinson. Henthorn then went to pieces,

giving away a penalty which Bishop converted, and a free kick in the area, to which Masters got a touch. The next goal resulted from a misun derstanding between the goalkeeper and a colleague and the ball rolled

into the net. ' Hurst Green then took command,

Masters completing a hat-trick, and Greenup and Jacques adding further goals. The eighth was an ov/n-goal conceded by Dcarden.

Spring Mill 3, Grindlcton 3.

AGAINST a team that had been scoring freely in recent matches, Spring Mill found it rathor difficult to settle. However, they eventually succeeded and both sides produced

some good football. Wood, who scored a hat-trick for Spring Mill, was sent off in the last

minute. Wood’s first goal, a header from a well-placed comer, was cancelled out

by Clayton, also following a comer. Exchanges continued to be fairly

even, with both sides battling hard to gain superiority. Then, after one of two niggling fouls, Chamley was booked for retaliatory action. Just before half-time, a mistake

by Brownlow in the home goal led to Parkinson (G.) putting the visitors into the lead. Later, Grindleton were forced on to the defensive but

. wero dangerous on the break. Wood put Spring Mill level once more, again with a header and when the home defence missed another good cross Wood was on hand to put it

home. Spring Mill continued to press

until, with two minutes left, Grindle ton were awarded a rather hotly- disputed penalty which Parkinson converted. From an ensuing remark, . Wood ended a rather eventful after

noon by being sent off. Spring Mill: Brownlow, Gates,

A ROSS GOAL

PROVES WINNER

Clithcroe Res 0, Waddington 1.

ON THIS form Waddington should win the championship of division one of Blackburn Combination, of which they are the present leaders. They attacked well and defended b r i l l i a n t l y . Cl i t h e r o e Reserves can take heart that they can only improve after having gone six weeks with out a win. They welcomed back 'Paul McGuire, Peter Coonan and Eddie Preedy. The villagers were first to

settle down and the'home goal soon had. several" narrow escapes before the visitors went ahead. McGuire lost pos session to John Waddington whose harmless looking cross seemed to be well covered by Coonan but he completely miskicked and let in Ross to give Farnsworth no chance. For the next 25 minutes the

ling the tune, with Payton in the role of a Pied Piper; his fast running down the left flank was creating havoc in the Ashton defence. The luck less Gillibrand let another good chance slip by shooting straight at the keeper. When Ashton at last got

going, Houldsworth was cal led upon to save a long shot. Clitheroe hit back, splitting the home defence time after time, and missing more scor ing chances with Eyles and Orrell being at fault. Then, with only their sec

the side. Beard and Eyles came near

Waddington midfield took control and the front running of Ross and Ainsworth gave the Clitheroe defence a terr

ible time. In a spasmodic attack, McGuire

beat four men, put in a good cross under pressure,' and Johnson got in a good h e a d e r b u t g o a lk e ep e r Grainger was equally brilliant. Then came the save of the match. Simon Whiteside unleashed a powerful 20- yard drive and Farnsworth flung himself across the goalmouth to fingertip the ball outside the post for a comer. Just before half-time Pinch had a

great chance to equalise but lost possession with only the goalkeeper to beat. Eyles, CUtheroe’s best for ward, also had a good chance but shot over from just inside the box. The first half belonged exclusively to Waddington. A f t e r th e tu rn - ro u n d th e

Reserves were a completely diffe rent side. Eyles was moved into the forward line to pressurise Wadding- ton’s back four and Clitheroe were much better for this. Simms, at the heart of the visitors’

defence, made some very important tackles and covered superbly. After 65 minutes Preedy had the easiest of chances and yet, with only the ’keeper to beat, he pushed the ball wido of the post. A bad backpasa by John Wadding-

ton put the visitors ’keeper under immense pressure as Pinch won the ball but it was somehow scrambled away at the cost of a comer. Pinch was unlucky not to score

when he bravely went for a bouncing ball with his head, but Richards hooked the ball over the bar. In an infrequent Waddington a t ta c k , . Farnsworth did well to save from Ainsworth. With 20 m in u te s le f t , tho

Reserves substituted Dobson for Bush and pushed Sharp into midfield in an effort to get more heading power. Waddington substituted s tr ik e r Ainsworth for defender Biaiecki as they were under constant pressure, but try as they would,' Clitheroe could not get the ball into

the net. The Reserves were well served by

McGuire and Eyles; Waddington by Simms, who- was the man of the match, foreshow and Ross. This exciting match, in which there were no failures, was watched by a crowd of over 60. A draw would have been a fair result. C l i th e ro e Res: Farnsworth,
