Shawbridge side get revenge
Darwen 0, Clitheroc 1 CLITHEROE gained their leaders
IN a rain-interrupted match, Whalley improved their championship chances by defeating their neighbours while Earby could only manage to draw. As a result, both teams
are level at the top of the table. This match, which could
have petered out into a dismal draw, eventually provided a most exciting finish due to the enterprise of both sides. Read put Whalley in on a
wicket more suited to water polo, but the visitors went steadily along against Read’s pace attack and despite several interruptions by rain. Later batsmen did not score
as quickly as they might have done and during a further interruption Anderson made a generous declaration at 97 for 5, setting Read to pass this total in just over an hour plus' the extra overs. At one stage, Whalley must have felt that they had been
too generous. Read, after losing an early wicket, went, on in great style with skipper Fair- clough 'batting particularly well and taking 20 off Hall’s third over.

file recall into the attack, of Jim Rudd, who, together with Hall, called on all his experi ence to dismiss the Read bats men. At 91, Harwood, having hit

NORTHERN 'AWARDED'
CHAMPIONSHIP
WITH a good chance of be coming champions of the Rib- blesdale Youth League, Clith eroe were bitterly disappointed when, because of the weather, Sunday’s game with Blackburn Northern at Pleckgate was cal led off, the league ruling that each side should take one point, The effect of tljis_ is that
Northern are champions and Clitheroe runners-up. Clitheroe were eager to play,
but Northern would not budge; they rejected a plea to play a reduced number of overs in stead of the stated 32 and nei ther would they agree to play at Chatbum Road. Ironically, even at Blackburn,
the sun came out later in the afternoon and a reasonable period of play would have been possible. From Clitheroe’s point of
view file likelihood is that the Ribblesdale League manage ment committee will be asked to appoint two neutral umpires
for future similar “needle” games and invest them wi.h au thority to make the decision in cases where team captains can not reach agreement

set their calculations with an unbeaten 72. No matter how Ron Wilson, acting Clitheroc skipper, permutated h is bow lers, the Cherry Tree profes sional remained unperturbed. When fielders packed the leg side he concentrated his strokes to the off, and yicc-versa, such
them to 61 and then thc pro fessional and Holland saw 107 hoisted. But it was only in the- first of the extra five overs that the winning hit was made. This was one occasion when
survived thc shock of losing a wicket with the first ball. Flatlcy and Woodhead took
the Clitheroc bowling was below par. John Boden sent down several loose deliveries, which Flatlcy hammered to the boundary. Tighter bowling in the early stages of the Cherry Tree innings would have slowed the scoring rate and exerted a pressure that may have temp ted the batsmen to take chances; instead they benefited from a wet ball and a wicket that did not provide a really secure foothold. Clitheroe’s innings was inter
rupted several times by, rain. They opened on a green and lively wicket and, before they knew where they were, four wickets had fallen for only 20
runs. A shower had a taming
effect on tlte wicket and Colin Bacon (41) and Stephen Ben nett (25) staged a recovery, with Ron Wilson later helping with an unbeaten 33 and sharing a last-wicket stand of 40 with Garth Sutcliffe. - • A minute or two before'
