BONFIRES AND FIRE WORKS illuminated th e town on Saturday night as hundreds of people celebra
ted the 361st anniversary of Guy Fawkes’ “ gunpowder plot.”
One of the biggest bonfires
in the district was that held in Croasdale Meadow, behind Warwick Drive, when more than 150 residents of War wick, Denbigh and Dorset Drive and Somerset Avenue —mostly newcomers to Clith- eroe — gathered together to celebrate the occasion.
The bonfire was arrangedround the fire and, to avoid
by residents on the estate and a circular was sent to each house inviting parents to bring along their children. Although many of these residents were new to the town and had not yet made friends in the neighbourhood, the response was favourable and many able-bodied men and boys soon set to work on building their bonfire To reach the meadow a
stream had to be crossed so a group of boys built a bridge across out of sturdy planks. F o rm s were arranged
WESTMORLAND M P ATTACKS LABOUR GOVERNMENT
Mr. Michael Jopling, M.P. for Westmorland, spoke at the
half-yearly-meeting of Clitheroe Division Women’s Unionist Association at the Conservative Club Whalley on Saturday. “The present economic plight of the country,” he said,
'‘was entirely due to two years of Socialist mismanagement, and was not, as was often heard, the result of thirteen years “wasted” by the Conservatives. “ In those years we had the
greatest economic improve ment in. our history. These last two years have broken much of the sound work cre
ling, believed tile Marxist' theory that money was better in the hands of the State than in the hands of the individual; this was tile basis of the •Great Divide” of which Mr.
ated since 1951.” The Socialists, said Mr. Jop
Heath spoke a f the Blackpool Conference. "We are living under the
terial dictatorship, demands, tin-eats, sinister coercion with out -’legislation. Parliament is being bulldozed by this Govern ment.”
Employments Tax he added, ‘In my own area agriculture, quarrying and tom-ism are the main types of employment and tills tax is hitting these concer ned in a scandalous way—going completely against regional

accidents, a wooden platform was set up for letting oil rockets.
Meanwhile,' other residents
were preparing refreshments for the event.
One man made a huge
potaloe. pie using no fewer than 21 lbs of potatoes, five lbs. of meat and three lbs. of onions.
Also provided were saus
age rolls, baked potatoes and treacle toffee, all set out on tables near the fire. At 6-30 p.m. Dianne Clay
ton lit the bonfire and the celebrating began. Children flocked to the
meadow where the ai»- was lit up with flames and fireworks. During the evening, one
woman decided to provide lollies for the children and so many children were present that 140 lollies had to be obtained. Someone else generously provided roast chestnuts. As it grew late and the
children and their parents made their way home the fire burned on merrily right through the night. Sunday morning was opera
tion clean-up. Children and adults collected all the burnt- out fireworks and other litter from around the smouldering fire, the tables and seats were moved and the bridge demo lished. Croasdale Meadow is now
as tidy as ever and there is hardly a trace of the bonfire left. Happy memories- will, remain for a long-'time and next year the residents hope to celebrate bonfire night in a similar manner.
