shops in tile Wballey Road area which include some of the oldes'
established and best-known businesses in Clitheroe. A though many of these shops have not been modernised because of some o'
the shop owners’ fear for the future, the proprietors claim that they can offer gooth as good and as cheap as those sold elsewhere in the town anj that customers receive the benefit of friendly and experienced personal service often lacking in bigger and hosier shops. Probably the oldest establised retail business in Clith
eroe is Mr. Joseph Dewhurst’s grocery store in Whalley Road, which was opened in 1847 by Mr. Giles Dewhurst. Grandson of the original

Newcomers impressed by friendly customers
As the-- old houses in the
area are pulled down, new ones are gradually taking their place and many new comers to Clitheroe settle in the Whalley Road vicinity. The steady trade and
friendly atmosphere of the area . also attracts new shop keepers who have taken over old-established family busi- lesses.
One of these newcomers,
vlr. Alan Cartlidge, has >een a newsagent for .25 years and left his shop in Cheshire to take over Mr. and Mrs. Harvey’s news- agency in Whalley Road. Since he arrived in the town Mr. Cartlidgc has been astounded by the interest and consideration of his customers.
“My wife and I like it
here very much mainly be cause the people are so much more neighbourly than we’ve known in the past,” says Mr. Cartlidge.
Mr. A. Morris, who has
been in a confectionery shop in Whalley Road since Feb ruary, serves customers with high class yet simple foods, all made in his own bakery behind the shop.
Perhaps the reason why his
trade has increased by 50 per cent since he took over the shop is because of his long experience as a top baker. In Cleveleys he owned a similar business and he has also had experience in all aspects of hotel catering.
Business, he says, is
extremely good and the people are easy to serve so long as they are given best quality goods.
FIRST ATTEMPT
Another newcomer to the Whalley Road shopping scene is Mrs. Jean Scaffali, who has never run a business before but bought the shop because she wanted to try life as a shopkeeper and because its position was near her home in Langshaw Drive. Now that she has got used
to, working in the shop she would not like to move to bigger premises .in- the centre
