Sparrows Group Awarded £50 Million Crane Management Contract With
Major UKCS Operator Sparrows Group, the engineering and maintenance specialists for the global energy and industrial sectors, has secured a contract worth approximately £50 million with a major UKCS operator to provide crane management services across its operating assets in the North Sea.
The five-year agreement, which also has two, two-year extension options, will see Sparrows deliver crane operations and maintenance services across 10 of the operator’s assets in the region.
Sparrows has held the contract since 2018 and will continue with the provision of operation, maintenance, and engineering services to ensure
the safety and reliability of 38 cranes. The scope includes development and implementation of planned maintenance routines, as well as undertaking planning and risk assessment for all lifting operations.
All onshore support will be carried out from Sparrows’ Aberdeen, Scotland headquarters, including technical and safety audits, and repair and refurbishment work as required.

Level Measurement from Berthold
Radiometric level measurements from Berthold are used in a wide variety of industries. Successful applications are primarily found where extreme process environments and thus demanding or difficult measuring conditions prevail.
The non-contact measuring systems are not affected by extreme temperatures, high pressures or dusty environments. Even strong foam formation or aggressive substances, such as corrosive or abrasive media, are no problem for our level measurement systems. Measuring ranges from a few millimetres up to several meters can be realized.
Minimization of extraneous influences Due to the measuring principle of radiometry, radiometric measurements can be influenced by various external
influences. These include, for example, interfering radiation, radioactive media or fluctuating gas densities.
In industrial plants, non-destructive tests are regularly carried out using gamma radiation. However, radiometric level measurements can be influenced by exactly this radiation, which leads to a significant increase in the count rate and thus to a misinterpretation of the level. Falsification of the measured value by external radiation can be prevented by Berthold’s XIP (X-ray Interference Protection) function. In this case, the measured value is frozen when interference radiation is detected. This is signaled accordingly via a digital output. If freezing the measured value is not wanted, Berthold also offers systems with RID (Radiation Interference Discrimination). Due to the energetic differentiation between the external radiation and the
radiation used in the measurement, the level measurement can continue without interruption.
If the product to be measured contains natural radioactivity (NORM products), a special measurement solution is required. Thanks to the PRC (Product Radiation Compensation) function, a Berthold level measurement can also be carried out on radioactive products without any problems by compensating the measurement accordingly.
Likewise, fluctuating gas densities can falsify the measured value unless a gas density compensation GPC (Gas Property Compensation) from Berthold is used.
