The site is large, vast glasshouses are full of shrubs and outside rows of trees team up like the Terracotta Army – shoulder to shoulder awaiting their marching orders to new homes.
At this time of year, an absolute favourite of mine is the Hellebore and Roots offer their Gold Collection with three bloom filled plants, perfect to brighten any dark new year garden. Hellebores are a member of the buttercup family and their flowers offer valuable food for any early pollinators. They also flower for months on end, performing their socks off (fluffy winter ones of course!) in difficult shady spots. They look equally at home in winter pots too, pair them with a little evergreen conifer and some ivy for an eye-catching display.
Stem colour is also much admired at this time of year and everything from red and yellow stemmed dogwoods, to silver birch or golden bamboo is bound to be in demand and very worthwhile considering for your outdoor space. Or how about something unusual for a new year, perhaps plants which conjure up thoughts of much longed-for sunshine?
The ‘Hand of Buddha’ citrus is something I guarantee you will not have seen, I certainly hadn’t before I came across this triffid like treasure at Roots! In the cold winter months, this would add some unique interior design to a conservatory or porch, while it will happily adorn a patio in the summer, certainly a talking point for visitors! Its fruit too offers the best zest around!
Or perhaps you’d like to grow a fig with a difference?! ‘Brown Turkey’ is the cultivar we most often see, but peruse the Roots website and you’ll come across all manner of hardy varieties, including the sensationally named ‘Little Miss Figgy’, the striped 17th Century Tiger Fig, the ‘White ‘Marsailles’ Fig and ‘Ice Crystal’ with stunning deeply cut foliage. The ideal candidates for a fruit filled 2026!
With so much to choose from, what will you be taking home from our latest plant-based Cotswolds arrival?
