Well, that had to be one take [laughs] because it was literally… it seeped down to my sk in and my undies. Yeah, it was pretty gnar ly to be in New York City with, I think we had 350 background actor s, angry protestor s. And fake tear gas. I t was one of those New York summer days, so it was stick y and hot and yeah, it was not one of the most fun days on set. And people were really wor r ied that it had actually happened. And then they were really wor ried about my Bottega bag – ‘Did she ruin the Bottega bag? Is the Bottega bag OK?’ [laughs]
Jon Hamm returns this season, you guys have such good chemistry? The Hamm-enater Did you see him dancing at the bad bunny concert, he went viral? No!
It’s great. He doesn’t take himself seriously at all? Not at all. He’s this tall, dark , handsome drink of water and he is the goofiest, sweetest…
There is a product that is definitely yours – Lolavie. We loved the recent footage of you blow drying Courtney Cox’s hair with it? Where did you learn those skills? Well, I’ve watched Chris [McMillan] for 35 years.
18
Reese said you can blow dry hair better than most stylists? I’ve done my gir lf r iends’ hair at their weddings, I’ve done their make-up. Yeah, I love it. So I have a side hustle. If you need your hair and make-up done for your wedding or for anything – I’m available!
Talking of getting glammed up, we found out recently that you have never attended the Met Gala – Are you more of a homebody than we think? I’m a homebody but I also love to watch those things. Crowds are not easy for me. I don’t love crowds. Since a k id I’ve not liked crowds.
Back to ‘The Morning Show’, what has it been like, the evolution from season one to season four and also, having Reese [Witherspoon] by your side throughout it all? Well, I don’t know what I do without her by my side, to be honest. She’s my suppor t, we hold each other up. I feel like we’ve just grown into it and now it keeps accelerating. The drama has been increasing and it’s just wonder ful. We have so many incredible new cast members this season, Jeremy I rons, Mar ion Cotilla rd, Boyd Hollbrook… an embar rassment of r iches.
What was it like getting Jeremy Irons to play your father? I can’t quite believe that it happened, that he said ‘yes’. I t’s the same with Mar ion. When you’re in a show, you think , ‘Ah no, they won’t say yes.’ And then they do. And so I’m very proud to be par t of a show that people are excited to come and join.
You went viral when we saw you getting doused in oil on the streets of new york – can you talk about shooting that scene? It was one take – is that right?
You and Reese have made such a success of this show, when you were starting in the entertainment business, how were you different to then, and could you imagine being here today? I just wanted to get a job. A commercial would have been great. And it took three years to get one of those! I t’s like, I just want to work . Not that I didn’t think about the quality, well, actually I don’t think I did. So yeah, and how we’ve evolved? Maybe it’s because we weren’t so ambitious that we are where we are today. I think when you want something so bad, you tend to like, I don’t know, I’m not sure. I’m not answer ing the question very well.
When you look back, was there any project where you wish you’d had the kind of control that you and Reese have on ‘the morning show’, that might have made things go differently? Yes. [laughs] And that’s all we can say. We did what we were told. ‘
The Morning Show’ is not only a show about women in leadership roles and powerful positions, but this is behind-the-scenes as much as it is in front of the cameras. How much do you see the impact that this might have on conversations about women in leadership roles? I mean, I think it’s wonder ful for women to see a show that has women in power, and I think for Reese and myself to be here is k ind of unexpected, at least I don’t think we planned on being here in these seats.
Your friendship with reese witherspoon is very inspiring, how do you reflect on this bond today? With a lot of pr ide and joy and it moves me, because meeting her 25 year s on the set of ‘Fr iends’, playing my sister. And we were both k ids and we’ve come a long way. I don’t think we ever anticipated that we would be sitting here today producing and star r ing in a really loved show on Apple TV+ network , streaming network – because that didn’t exist back then.
