There is no item more used, and more essential in your wardrobe, than a decent pair of boots! (Well, that and maybe also a white shirt and some killer jeans). But, yes, decent boots have the ability to add style to any outfit in your current rotation, and the change in weather in October is all the encouragement we need to reach for our favourite pair, that can even be worn with summer attire.

The history of boots is fascinating in many fashion studies. They were a popular style of women's footwear in the 19th century but were not recognized as a high fashion item until the 1960s. In fact, they first became widely trending in the 1970s and since then have remained a staple of women's winter wardrobes.

And whilst a classic pair of boots is always a great investment, over the past few seasons other statement boots have gone mainstream — with American cowboy styles infiltrating the cities, and black being rivalled with 'neutrals’. And so, investing in a few well-made pairs of boots will not only prepare you (literally) for weather in autumn and winter, but it also adds mileage, adding a more dressed-up energy to limitless outfits.

Of course, the ever-popular black boots are versatile, and as appropriate for work as they are for a casual weekend or a night out. There are always colour options, of course— black boots can be worn every single day - with brown or beige the next most popular choice. Plus, there's no risk of this colour going out of style as it co-ordinates with everything.

Knee highs, like those pictured opposite, add drama to any outfit and look equally great with a mini as they do leggings. Basically, this is the cut to choose if you feel like you need the volume turned up and to add extra leg length. Just be sure to check the calf measurement; too loose and they will be at your ankles... make sure they will fit comfortably around your leg - too tight and you will be struggling in any shopping trip.
