THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE SHREWSBURY FLOWER SHOW

As the nights draw in, Television Horticulturist Camilla Bassett-Smith, reflects on her first visit to one of this country’s most delightful flower shows, just a stone’s throw from our Herefordshire borders.

I have spent many years working on the television content of flowers shows up and down the country, but Shrewsbury Flower Show and I, up until 2024, had yet to be acquainted. All this changed when an email invitation arrived asking if I would consider taking part in this year’s show and thus this important part of horticultural history and I were destined to meet.

Before the show arrived on the 9th and 10th August, I was honoured to be invited to an event for members of Shropshire Horticultural Society who organise the show, held in April at specialist plant centre, Love Plants, part of Salop Leisure’s Emstrey headquarters. The evening was full of passionate plantspeople and excited botanical buzz about the big event ahead. Ted Baker florals were an obvious choice and the perfect opportunity to showcase my latest two-piece suit sales purchase!

Forward wind to late summer and Shrewsbury Flower Show was ready to share its horticultural haute couture. This show has its roots in the gooseberry and carnation fairs of the 1830s, with the ‘Shrewsbury Flower Show’ becoming official in 1875. It actually holds a world record for being the world’s longest running horticultural show held in the same location and having been part of this magical gathering, its reasons for the reasons for its longevity are clear to see.
