Chimney Demolition And Replacement For O-I Glass

PTSG – via constituent company Pendrich Height Services – was initially contracted in 2021 to deliver specialist steeplejack services at O-I’s glass manufacturing plants in Alloa, in the central lowlands of Scotland. The team from Pendrich carried out a survey of the 76-metre reinforced concrete chimney at the site, which had been in use continuously for the last decade. The survey found structural defects that warranted its demolition. However, due to the critical importance of the chimney to the plant, this was not feasible until 2025, when a major shutdown of the plant was scheduled. The chimney is in the middle of the plant and the structural defects were found during full production.
Pendrich designed a support girdle that would give structural support to the chimney to expand its lifespan up to the shutdown of the plant. This work was conducted during full production, so that the plant wouldn’t suffer any downtime.
During the shutdown itself, Pendrich’s specialists meticulously executed the demolition of the chimney from the top down to the base, using their sliding band platform. This allowed a new 76-metre steel chimney to be manufactured, which was delivered to site. Pendrich then erected the new structure using 500-feet-high cranes.
The customer was delighted with the outcome. Pendrich’s Managing Director, Mark Perfect, will be recommending this solution for any similar projects in the future.
