Gas Safety
Why is it so important to have your gas detection system serviced?
Fixed gas detection systems are an important safety system for any commercial building.
They are comparable to fire alarms in terms of potential for life saving and prevention of damage to property, but more often than not, gas detection maintenance gets overlooked.
As a specialist in commercial gas detection servicing, Viewmyair attend sites all over the country to test existing gas detection systems. The first stage inevitably is awareness – BS EN 60079 refers directly to the maintenance schedule for fixed gas detection systems and depending on the application suggests a sensor maintenance schedule
in line with manufacturer’s
recommendations. Most manufacturers will have guidance for required maintenance which is usually annually but could be 6-monthly or even quarterly depending on the sensor type and the environment it’s installed in.
Viewmyair maintain systems by a variety of
manufacturers. The most common
problem we encounter on a first servicing visit to a new site, is the gas sensors not responding to the target gas. Gas sensors have a finite lifespan, the length depends on a number of factors including the gas type, (CO, Methane etc) and environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, dust, prolonged exposure to toxins or even the target gas. When a gas sensor becomes desensitised over time, there is no way of it identifying that it’s no longer working. The only way to test one for certain is to apply a known concentration, calibrated test gas to the sensor and verify that it responds accurately. In the event that the sensor does not respond correctly, the sensor should either be recalibrated using calibration gas as a reference per the individual manufacturer’s guidance, or replaced with a new factory calibrated unit.

equipment will also evaluate the room as a whole to make sure the sensors are in the optimal positions accounting for air flow and equipment positioning within the space.
The importance of maintaining these life-saving pieces of equipment cannot be overstated. Employing the services of experienced gas detection specialists will ensure that each gas detector in the building is being routinely tested, debris free, calibrated and replaced if necessary. Not only will having a specialist looking after the system keep it in good working order, but will often prolong the useable
life of the system by replacing
parts where necessary. Viewmyair are an award winning
gas
detection service and maintenance company who are trusted by many publicly listed companies in the UK and look after some of the country’s most prestigious buildings, alongside schools, universities
and anywhere with commercial plant rooms.
