“I have 3 or 4 ways of starting a painting but in general I do a tonal block in, followed by a warm messy layer of a transparent warm colour. This is often one of, or some combination of transparent yellow oxide, transparent red oxide and sometimes quinacridone gold. “There are times when I mix it up and use
transparent cool colours also. I then put in either transparent or opaque paint to get the local colour, temperature and value that I am looking for.”
