Garlic, Onions & Shallots
An essential in any kitchen store cupboard, onions, shallots and garlic are the base for a huge range of dishes, from soups and stews to curries and stir-fries. Grow your own and you’ll never be without these flavourful bulbs. A top tip to avoid tears when peeling onions – do as the best chefs do and peel them underwater!
Garlic ‘Germidour’
Popular and reliable French softneck garlic well adapted to the British climate. Ideal for autumn planting, producing large white bulbs with a mild flavour.

Once the leaves start to turn yellow, they can be harvested carefully with a garden fork and laid out
somewhere dry. Leave until bulbs are firm and skins papery and store in cool, dry place.

Onions, shallots and garlic need a fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
Plant onion and shallots outdoors from Oct to Dec. 10cm apart
with the tips just showing above ground, space 20cm between
rows. Plant garlic cloves so the tips are 2-3cm below the soil surface, 15cm apart and 30cm between rows. Water after planting to settle soil.
