THE JOURNAL

BRANDON SCHUBERT

Camden-based Brandon Schubert Ltd was launched in March 2019; Schubert worked for Ben Pentreath before going it alone, but started off on a very different career path, training as a lawyer in his native US.

What are you known for? What I hope people say is that my spaces feel timeless. I try to avoid the trend of ‘design for Instagram’, and instead focus on creating interiors that not only look beautiful but actually make sense: where the architecture works with the furniture and the effect is durable and not fleeting. The details make a room feel resolved, and a resolved room is what I strive for.

What inspires you? Old houses! I love them. The best interiors evolve from an interplay between architecture and decoration, and I love the authenticity that comes from starting with a historic interior. And, if not, I love to create the illusion that an interior has history.

What projects have you got coming up? We are excited about a new project in Dartmouth Park coming up soon, as well as some clients from the US who are relocating and have approached us to work with them – before they have even bought their house! We’re currently offering input on the property purchase, which is great fun.

What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? We’ve recently been really excited about using several of the luxurious cut velvets from Watts of Westminster. They immediately convey a sense of history and come in wonderful array of colours.

STEPHANIE BARBA MENDOZA

After working with Martin Brudnizki,, Stephanie Barba Mendoza set up her studio in early 2020. The Mexican designer grew up surrounded by colour and pattern, and these early loves are translated into every project.

What inspires you? I am inspired by all sorts of things and inspiration can strike at any moment! It could be a moment lived and reimagined, a song (music is a big creative outlet for me), a fashion show, a beautifully made garment or a trip. Let’s not forget about Instagram, TV and films and books. I am drawn to nature, especially the way colour is intertwined and expressed; I always believe it provides the perfect, ready-made colour palette from which to work from.

What’s the thread that runs through every scheme, regardless of the aesthetic? My designs are coloured and patterned and are rich with personality. I like layering materiality and mixing antique items with bespoke pieces as I feel this helps make up the rich tapestry of a scheme.

What projects are you working on at the moment? A mid-century home in Coconut Grove, Miami, a maximalist dream house in Antwerp, Belgium and a large, family home house in west London.

What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? I love Miles de Lange’s’ new showroom [Alexander Lamont + Miles]. He has the most beautifully crafted pieces and fabrics with incredible textures. I have used some of the fabrics in the house in Miami.
