Statehood: Minnesota became a state in 1858, and is the 32nd state in the union and the 12th-largest state in US.

L’Etoile du Nord: Nicknamed the North Star State, the state motto means ‘Star of the North’ in French. Other nicknames include the Land of 10,000 Lakes and the Gopher State.
Medical marvel: The first open heart surgery and the first bone marrow transplant in the US were performed at the University of Minnesota.
Pink and White Lady’s Slipper: The state flower, it looks like a moccasin, or slipper, and grows in damp, wooded areas.

Common loon: There are more common loons in Minnesota than in any other state, except Alaska.
Walleye: Found in lakes throughout Minnesota, the walleye is a favourite among anglers.
