hey say it’s an ill wind that blows no good, and if that is the case, we’ve had a long run of ill winds. From the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the ongoing supply crisis and the rising inflation on the costs of metals and materials, there have been plenty of challenges for the wind energy industry over the past few years.
At the same time, the importance of the industry has never been clearer, the sanctions and restrictions against Russia have cast a light on the limitations of coal, gas and oil – the fossil fuel trifecta. The world is waking up to the vulnerabilities within our energy security, and we’re already seeing increasing interest in wind power from governments around the globe – particularly with regards to offshore wind power. At the same time, onshore wind power – while an invaluable player in any green future – is coming under growing pressure due to the introduction of increasingly strict requirements and regulations by governing bodies around the world. That’s not to say that the industry isn’t trying to find ways of boosting the world’s onshore capabilities. On page 30, we look at how repowering – the replacement of old plants with new, more efficient ones – is advancing steadily across Europe. This is an invaluable process for onshore wind, where the best performing areas are already occupied by legacy turbines. Similarly, on page 25, we learn about why there’s reasons for optimism in the face of the supply chain crisis and its many challenges.
And speaking of challenges, one of the key obstacles facing the industry, and our hopes for a greener future, is that of public opinion. While wind energy’s popularity remains on the rise among the general public, few are excited about turbine installations near their homes. Measures to address these concerns, such as the implementation of aircraft detection lighting systems to combat light pollution – which we discuss on page 34 – can go a long way. There’s still far to go on our way towards a renewable, green energy future, but with each turbine that goes up, we get a little closer.
