n some ways, 2022 might have proved an even more challenging year for the air travel industry than the two that preceded it. Yes, passenger numbers continue to improve and the worst financial concerns brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic have been staved off, but new challenges have emerged in their place. At the same time, the support and understanding shown to the industry by governments and the general public at large during the pandemic has largely dried up, now that many consider Covid to be in the rearview mirror.

Nothing could be further from the truth, of course – for air travel in particular. The roughly 400,000 jobs lost across the industry as a result of the pandemic have not yet been reintroduced, which wreaked havoc across Europe this summer, as airports and airlines faced a shortage of baggage handlers, security staff, air traffic controllers and other pivotal employees. This led to a lack of ability across the industry to ramp up to meet consumer demand, which resulted in flight cancellations and delays across the board, along with the creation of passenger capacity limits at a number of European airports. That’s not to say that the new is all bad, of course. The rise in passenger numbers is still heartening, even if much is yet to be done before the return of pre-pandemic figures. Technological advances also look set to aid air travel’s recovery, with the industry looking into the ways in which digitalisation could help lessen the impact of the ongoing staffing shortage, which we explore on page 13. Similarly, on page 48, we look into how machine learning and AI can be paired with digital towers to improve operational efficiency, safety and resilience, and help to maximise situational awareness for air traffic controllers. Elsewhere, this issue of Future Airport tackles the effects of climate change and extreme weather events on the industry on page 35 and speaks to those responsible for designing the ‘greenest airport in India’, Noida International Airport, on page 18. We’re in a period of great challenges, but also one of great determination and resourcefulness – and this industry has everything it needs to succeed.
