t feels like it’s been some time since global security last stood on as shaky ground as it does today, after seeing conflict after conflict break out in 2023. From the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh territory between Armenia and Azerbaijan, fresh breakouts of violence in Sudan and in Ethiopia, rising tensions between the US and China over Taiwan, and, of course, the war between Israel and Hamas – it’s hard to see the situation improving in 2024. Instead, this may well be the new normal. At times like these, the importance of alliances and support when it comes to defence is imperative. 2023 saw Finland formally accepted into Nato, with Sweden’s application likely to be greenlit next year, but questions remain over what exactly this will mean for both nations, and how it will affect their defence strategies. We explore this topic on page 23 of this issue of Defence & Security Systems International. Similarly, increased global instability only serves to underline the need for innovation within defence, as armed forces look to ensure their equipment and technology stays ahead of their peers. One emerging and disruptive technology that looks set to have an outsized role in the future of defence is artificial intelligence, and on page 8 we hear from Hugh Woodward, head of HQ and strategy at the UK’s Defence Artificial Intelligence Centre, to learn more about the work the nation is doing in this area. Likewise, on page 40, we look at developments implementing AI across air forces, as so-called ‘AI pilots’ look set to replace or operate alongside human counterparts in the coming years. Even for those of us in nations currently untouched by war, we’re all living in uncertain times. 2024 is likely to also be marked by global conflict. It’s a dark note to end on, but also offers something to bear in mind – for all our coverage here of military and defence advancements and developments, the most dependable weapon in any arsenal that aims to provide long-term security is the olive branch of peace. We can only hope that we’ll see a little more of it in the year ahead.

He who seeks peace I
