Company insight

Drying processes for oncological products

LAST Technology is developing an innovative ATEX drying technology for processing highly potent API containing solvents.

T

he term “cancer” refers to a disease in which cells in the body grow uncontrollably. These form masses of cells, called tumours, which have the ability to infiltrate normal nearby organs and tissues and spread to other parts of the body through the blood or lymphatic system, altering their structure and function. The journey is not over yet, but research in the fight against cancer is making progress every day. The development of Highly Potent Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (HPAPI) is steadily increasing. This is not surprising: those individually tailored active ingredients are achieving great success in oncology treatments. For pharmaceutical

companies, processing and filing highly potent drugs is full of challenges – small volumes and quantities demand a great containment effort.

Processing highly potent APIs requires robust safety measures for both people and products. Room and machines must form a functioning overall system to ensure safety. LAST Technology is providing comprehensive advice on room design, pressure and water waste concepts, as well as on decontamination and containment. It is also important to take a detailed look at the interface between the preparation, filling and/or tableting and containment. The company provides an important support to the process upstream of the

filling and/or tableting process by supplying an innovative hot air-drying system for processing ingredients containing high concentration of solvents. The machines are ATEX-rated and certified. They are equipped with some very sophisticated features such as a safer and quicker way to keep confinement while changing filters on a glovebox (bag-in/bag-out system) and an integrated CIP system for guaranteeing zero back contaminations between one batch and the next. LAST Technology’s machines are reliable, durable and fully compliant to cGMP, FDA and GAMP 5 rules and practices. ●
