ecovery is a funny thing. We often see it in simplistic terms: through redemptive narratives of triumph over adversity or gooey Hollywood storylines with heart-warming endings. In the real world, bouncing back is a messier endeavour. Progress lost can be regained, only for an unexpected bump in the road to knock best-laid (or re-laid) plans off course. Journeys of renewal are more often than not built on rough and meandering trajectories, not straight ascending arrows. From where I’m sitting right now, things are looking up for the cruise industry, as small but significant itineraries are coming to life. In the UK ships are departing for domestic cruises, voyages in the Mediterranean are set to follow and Caribbean cruises are also expected to resume this summer. On top of this, orders for this year and next indicate that the pandemic has reinvigorated consumer booking habits. The expeditionary sector is one part of the industry that looks set to capitalise on this growing sense of wanderlust. As Monique Ponfoort of Aurora Expeditions tells us on page 30 bookings for expeditions to the Arctic, Antarctica and the Russian Far East indicate a pent-up demand for visits to these bucket list locations. It’s a sector that looks uniquely poised to thrive in a post-pandemic, climate-focused age. On page 10, CLIA president Kelly Craighead talks with similar optimism about the future of the industry going forward, disclosing the measures the organisation has taken to combat coronavirus and advance talks to resume cruising in the US and across the globe.

Meanwhile, with an impressive roster of ships set to be unveiled in 2021, even if some might not be leaving port for months, shipbuilders continue to produce vessels amid the chaos of Covid-19. On page 13 Lars Lühr Olsen, managing director of Ulstein Verft, talks about how demands in design are changing to accommodate the current crisis. Such flexibility will be a valuable asset going forward across the entire industry as the sector begins its choppy journey towards recovery.
