Raw material supply challenges key talking point at EOS assembly

Securing access to raw materials was the key issue raised at the online general assembly of the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) on June 24. Gerd Ebner of Timber-Online presented “Latest data and developments on bark-beetle outbreaks across central Europe”, explaining that since 2015, 369 million m3

of damaged wood has

accumulated in Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria alone. As a result, the price of logs fell to historically low levels by the summer of

2020. However, the strong log demand subsequently caused prices to rise significantly.

In the space of just 12 months, log prices have risen by almost €50/m3

. Thus,

record roundwood prices have already been achieved in central Europe or will be reached in the coming weeks.

Central European sawmills have invested in additional capacity and further processing capabilities due to the high timber demand prospects. However, delegates were told that spruce

Ante Holz expands into southern Germany

years ago when it struggled with securing sufficient log supplies.

The acquisition of the facility in Rötenbach-Friedenweiler on June 14 will see 60 new employees start operations again immediately.

Germany sawmilling group Ante Holz has expanded into southern Germany by acquiring a mill in the Black Forest that closed in 2012.

The mill was formerly operated by Holzwerk Rötenbach but closed nine

Ante Holz said restarting the mill did not require a lot of lead time. The plant has a Linck V40 chipping line with a cutting capacity of around 150,000 solid metres of softwood in one-shift operation. According to Ante Holz managing director Jörn Kimmich, the location will initially serve primarily as a raw lamellar production facility for further processing within the group. In further investment steps, expansion on the approximately 23ha site is planned.

The mill is believed to have an annual cutting capacity of 120,000m3

.

International Softwood Conference goes hybrid this year

Registration has opened for the 69th International Softwood Conference (ISC), which will be a hybrid conference taking place in Helsinki on October 13-14. The conference is being run by the European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF) and the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS), together with hosting association Sahateollisuus (Finnish Sawmills Association). It will be moderated by Keith Fryer.

“The ongoing pandemic, the high level of uncertainty, but also the willingness to have the feel of a normal conference, pushed us to come up with this innovative format for the ISC 2021,”

said Kai Merivuori, managing director of Sahateollisuus, in agreement with EOS and ETTF.

While the co-organisers look forward to meeting many stakeholders in person, the hybrid format will allow people who cannot travel to attend the conference the ability to view in a digital format. The hybrid ISC conference will be held on October 14 in one day and will be preceded by the traditional welcome cocktail on October 13. The gala dinner will take place on October 14.

A ship carrying timber from Sweden to Morocco has run aground in the estuary of the Angerman River near the beginning of its journey.

The 130m long ship – the Koningsborg – ran aground on a sandbank at Sandö on June 24 after developing engine problems. The location is near where the river feeds into the Bay of Bothnia.

A statement from the Swedish Coast Guard said it had worked to minimise the risks of oil leaking into the water. “The ship had a pilot on board when they suffered a so-called ‘blackout’ and lost manoeuverability,” said the Coast Guard’s Roger Gebauer.

will be less available in the future and it will be a seller’s market for roundwood. “Therefore, after a period of abundance of raw materials, there will be a scarcity of resources in the softwood sector,” delegates heard.

Jarno Seppala of Indufor shared how Russia’s log export ban is impacting on global sawnwood markets. He said that the Russian measures will push China to diversify away from Russian import of logs which might put pressure on European forests.
