JJ Smith supplies Cursal automatic cross-cutting line to BSW Timber

As part of its investment programme, BSW Timber has installed a new automatic cross-cutting line at its Newbridge-on-Wye site in Wales.
The final specification for the saw line comprised an infeed system with extended infeed chains and a separating system, and a TRSI saw unit fitted with two side aligning devices, one before the saw blade and one directly behind the blade to ensure the cut timber remained in packs prior to reaching the outfeed conveyor. The outfeed system consists of a 6000mm conveyor with two ejectors, the first rapid ejector being for smaller non-standard cut pieces. The second ejector is to push the cut packs onto a pre-stacking conveyor prior to the automatic overhead stacker
Weinig UK launches in-house events
Woodworking machinery manufacturer, Weinig UK, is set to launch its own in- house event timetable, with the first event on July 13-15. “We believe the pandemic has led to a massive shift in how our industry will approach events in the years to come,” said Malcolm Cuthbertson, managing director of Michael Weinig (UK) Ltd. “The last 14 months have been challenging for the industry and a timescale of when we will be able to freely attend large-scale exhibitions again has yet to become clear. This is why we’ve taken the decision to cancel our stand at the W Exhibition – a show we have exhibited at since it began over 30 years ago – and approach today’s changing market in an altogether different way.”
The result is the launch of Connect –
Weinig UK’s own series of hybrid events which will take place throughout the year at the company’s showroom in Abingdon in Oxfordshire.
“Each event will be tailored to meet the needs of our customers,” said Mr Cuthbertson. “We will adapt our topics to reflect changing market conditions, key production trends and the launch of exclusive products from both Weinig and Holz-Her in the UK. Our event calendar will focus on what is important to our industry and as a result, we will deliver meaningful experiences to our customers that hold true value.”

SCM launches new vertical panel saws
SCM has launched a new range of vertical panel saws – the gabbiani v, vs and vsi. The range is the result of a collaboration between SCM and an industry leader and has been developed to meet the different configuration needs and deal with every kind of production requirement. SCM says the range offers numerous advantages, including a reduction in space taken up on the factory floor and greater power and resistance over time. The range features several options: without scoring unit or with paired scoring

unit with two saw blades or, moreover, with the addition of an independent motor with mechanical insertion.
Gabbiani vertical panel saws can cut different types of wood materials and allow for one or more panels to be cut simultaneously.
Some of the models are able to make particularly precise cuts, while others are more suitable for making pre-cuts that will be completed by sizing edge banders or CNC machining centres, said the company.

lifting the cut timber to a new final pack ready for banding.
The line was installed in April by a combination of JJ Smith engineers and a Cursal technician, with additional infeed and outfeed driven chains installed by BSW’s own engineers.
David Burd, mill manager at the Newbridge-on-Wye facility, said the new line had met the objectives of achieving a safer working environment with less manual handling for employees, whilst delivering an uplift in efficiency, accuracy and productivity.
BI-MU and Xylexpo to combine in 2022
A major new exhibition concept dedicated to manufacturing technology will be launched at Fiera Milano-Rho from October 12-15, 2022, resulting from a partnership between BI-MU and Xylexpo, respectively organised by Ucimu-Sistemi per produrre - the association of Italian manufacturers of machine tools, robots and automation - and Acimall, the association of Italian woodworking machinery manufacturers. As reference events in their respective industries,
33.BI-MU (biennial exhibition of machine tools, robotics and automation, additive manufacturing, digital and auxiliary technologies) and Xylexpo (biennial exhibition of woodworking technology and furniture industry components) will be presented as distinct but complementary events, highlighting their respective specialisms while leveraging every possible synergy. Besides a wider technology line-up, visitors will have access to a rich agenda of additional events, in-depth debates on technical, technological and economic topics relevant for both sectors, through presentations, seminars and conferences. Special attention will be dedicated to the major topics of digital and sustainability. “A more and more crowded exhibition calendar, now complicated by the rescheduling of many events due to the pandemic, the new technologies and the stronger international competition require a deep and accurate revision of the exhibition concept, which cannot be ‘only’ a place where demand and supply meet,” said Luigi De Vito, president of Acimall.
