James Donaldson & Sons expands group with Kitchens International acquisition


The boards of James Donaldson & Sons (JDS) Ltd and Kitchens International Ltd have announced that, following its acquisition, Kitchens International, has become the latest addition to the JDS brand portfolio.


Kitchens International, Scotland’s leading independent kitchen retailer, will join the JDS portfolio of independent brands which includes MGM Timber, Donaldson Timber Engineering, James Donaldson Timber, James Donaldson Insulation, Smith &


Frater, Rowan Manufacturing and Nu-Style Products.


Kitchens International has six showrooms across Scotland and a strong contract fitting division.


It will strategically and operationally complement the current JDS retail and manufacturing portfolio, working closely with the existing kitchen offering through Smith & Frater, Optima Kitchen, Perform Panel and MGM Timber, allowing JDS to offer a full suite of interior options for


Brickability Group completes acquisition of Taylor Maxwell in £63m takeover deal


Brickability Group plc has completed a £63m takeover of Taylor Maxwell. Brickability, which currently operates businesses in the brick, roofing, plumbing and joinery fields, released a statement on July 1 saying the acquisition had been approved by shareholders. Taylor Maxwell has significant timber operations, including fencing, decking, landscaping timbers, construction wood, engineered timber and flooring as well as wood-plastic composites, façade systems and off-site construction solutions. It also has a brick business, with total group turnover exceeding £250m. Martin Rudge, managing director of Taylor Maxwell, described the move as an


exciting new chapter in the history of the business which would benefit employees, customers and suppliers. “We are very proud of what has been achieved over the last sixty years and how the business has developed into the company it is today,” said Mr Rudge. “Growth in recent times has been organic and this transaction is seen as a great opportunity to develop the business further as part of a larger organisation.” Brickability delivered annual revenues of £180m in the year ended March 31, 2021 and adjusted EBITDA of £17m. The acquisition of Taylor Maxwell is the 11th strategically significant acquisition made by Brickability since 2018.


Carpenter Oak supplies oak for major new D-Day memorial in Normandy


Devon-based Carpenter Oak has been involved supplying oak for a stunning new memorial to D-Day soldiers who lost their lives in Normandy during World War 2. The site in Ver-Sur-Mer overlooks Gold Beach and records every name of those under British command who lost their lives between the D-Day landings on June 6 and August 31 when the campaign concluded with the liberation of Paris. Carpenter Oak’s role in the project included the frame design, manufacture and erection of the pergola structure that covers the stone columns, comprising 84 beams and around 500 joists, using over 70m3


of oak.

Irish veneer product maker rebrands


Irish wood veneer manufacturer Merenda has embarked on a rebranding and new product launches to capitalise on the opportunities arising within the exponentially growing Irish & UK furniture industry.


The Leitrim-based firm, which employs 20 people, will launch three new products over the next year: Merenda Surface, Merenda Edge and Merenda Touch. Merenda Surface, the first to be launched, is a veneer surfaces and design solutions service to the interior fit-out industry. This will be followed in September by a new e-commerce edgebanding platform – Merenda Edge. The final launch is Merenda Touch, which the company says will be an exciting innovation in wood veneer. The company’s long-term strategic goals are to capitalise on furniture sector growth.
