New chair for CTI
who after four years in the post has decided to leave in order to spend more time on his other interests. Mr Goodfellow is group managing
director, strategic development, of Stewart Milne Group. He has over 35 years’ experience of working within the housebuilding and offsite timber frame sector, bringing vast and varied experience to the chair role of the CTI, where he previously served as a non-executive director. Well respected across the industry, Mr Goodfellow is a board member of the Structural Timber Association, having previously served as chair, and director of Offsite Solutions Scotland.

Oldfield appointed BWF president Above: David Oldfield
The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has appointed David Oldfield, commercial director at the Arnold Laver Group, as its new president. He succeeds Paul Bailey, founder and managing director of European Doorsets, who is a long-standing
member of the BWF executive board and BWF president since August 2019. Mr Oldfield has more than 30 years’ experience in the sector and first joined Arnold Laver & Co Ltd in 1990 as an apprentice. He has since worked his way up through the company and in October 2019 was appointed as joinery director, where he led a sales and estimating team, and managed site acquisitions and evaluations, before being appointed commercial director in February 2021.
Mr Oldfield has been a BWF committee, council, scheme and board member for more than 10 years and played a key role in setting up the BWF Fire Door Alliance. He recently served as vice-president of the BWF for 18 months and is currently chairman of the BWF Fire Door Alliance.
Taylor appointed as TTBS president
John Taylor has been appointed as president of the Timber Trades’ Benevolent Society (TTBS), taking over from Paul Snape, whose two-year tenure had come to an end. Mr Taylor, who was appointed at the TTBS’s annual general meeting in May, began his career with Coopers & Lybrand as an articled clerk in Birmingham. His association with the timber industry began through his wife, Anabel, whose father, Denis Butler, was chairman of the Wyckham Blackwell group.

Mr Taylor initially worked for Wyckham Blackwell on a part-time basis and became involved with the TTBS, helping to start a Midlands tennis competition and the Midlands Clay Pigeon competition. Mr Taylor became chief executive of
Wyckham Blackwell in 2007, a position he held until the company was sold in 2015. He joined the Midlands TTBS committee as treasurer in 2011 and in 2013 he become one of the two TTBS investment managers looking after the investment funds of the charity.
Obituary – Bill Keating
The Wood Technology Group is sad to announce that Bill Keating recently passed away at the age of 93. He was an honorary FIMMM.
Mr Keating was a committed member of the Australian branch of the Institute of Wood Science (IWSc) from the beginning and was synonymous with the advancement of wood science. As secretary and later chairman of the branch (from 1985-1989), he had a great and wide influence and contribution to the advancement of wood science. Mr Keating accepted the nomination as branch honorary secretary on the formation of the branch in 1973 and he was elected vice-president of the IWSc in 1984, and this today means that he is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. This was in recognition of his long and close association with the IWSc, particularly his interests in timber technology education, which provided the impetus for the (Australian) National Common Core Curriculum in Timber Technology. He worked for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and PMG (Postmaster General’s Department) involved in the fields of timber utilisation, standards for timber grading and general dissemination of information of wood properties. Mr Keating was a prolific author and contributor on wood science and technology.
Two new members elected to BMF board
Frank Elkins, chief operating officer at Travis Perkins plc and Lee Harwood, group finance director at Bradfords Building Supplies Ltd have been elected to the board of the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF).
The new board members replace Andrew Harrison, who stepped down following his retirement from Travis Perkins Plumbing & Heating and Mark Smith of MKM, who retired from the BMF board having completed two three-year terms as BMF hon treasurer.
