United voice formed to revive wood industry occupations
A new unified voice to represent the UK’s carpenters, joiners, and shopfitters – the Wood Occupations and Materials Alliance (WOMA) – has been launched in London. A signing ceremony of a declaration of intent to form WOMA took place at the joint Members’ Day of the Institute of Carpenters (IOC) and National Association of Shopfitters (NAS) at Carpenters Hall in the City of London on April 22. The new body was heralded as a step into the future for the IOC and NAS. Both organisations will continue to retain their independence, but WOMA is intended to be a publicly facing voice for the benefit of individuals and businesses across the wood sector. “WOMA is the unified voice that represents the interests of the wood occupations,” added James Filus, IOC director. “Through the IOC and NAS, WOMA has a unique vertical through the wood occupations, from education to employment, and beyond. Our ambition is to ensure the wood occupations are seen as professional, aspirational careers, respected by all.”

related sectors, but there are fears that not enough young people are choosing a career in the trades, with valuable experience also being lost with seasoned craftspeople retiring. The IOC and NAS are working hard to spotlight careers, training and professionalism in the sector. “This is a significant step within our sector,” said outgoing IOC president Geoff
Rhodes at the Members Day.
“There is so much fragmentation in our industry. WOMA will have the capacity to grow in the years ahead, let’s watch this space.”
Mr Rhodes said WOMA would be an umbrella organisation sitting above IOC and NAS. “In the future it may expand to include other like-minded organisations.”
Deanta UK opens new £15m flagship facility Conference returns
Deanta UK has officially opened its new £15m flagship facility in Cambridgeshire in a move that marks a new chapter for jobs, innovation, and growth.
The new facility on Lancaster Way, Ely is situated alongside the company’s existing premises, effectively bringing together all of Deanta’s operations under one roof, including design, research and development, operations, and distribution. The existing building has been repurposed to accommodate the company’s
manufacturing operations, previously based at Pymoor near Ely, consolidating Deanta’s operations for greater efficiency and collaboration.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Charlotte Cane, MP for the local constituency.
“The building is really a testament to the commitment and hard work of all our staff over the years,” Mike O’Toole, managing director of Deanta UK said shortly after the opening.
The UK Timber Design Conference returns on July 2 - this year at One Birdcage Walk in London - bringing together leading voices from across the built environment.
The conference, organised by Timber Development UK, will show how timber can be used to its fullest potential - with perspectives from across the supply chain exploring smarter design approaches, improved efficiency, long-term performance and greater social value. It brings together a dynamic mix of architects, engineers, developers and manufacturers to offer a programme that reflects the breadth of timber design today. From technical insights to big-picture strategy, the sessions are curated to spark meaningful discussion and innovation. About 200 delegates from across the timber supply chain and design/build community are expected to attend. The UK Timber Design Conference is supported by partners Swedish Wood and PEFC, along with session sponsors and exhibitors.
