SMARTER TIMBER TREATMENT
As the timber treatment sector adapts to increasing regulatory, environmental and commercial pressures, the role of plant technology has become more critical than ever, writes Joe Watson, director at Timber Treatment Solutions (TTS)
While much of the treatments conversation rightly focuses on preservatives and standards, the effectiveness of any treatment process ultimately depends on how well those systems are delivered in practice. From a supplier’s perspective, the biggest shift in recent years has been towards greater process control, automation and energy efficiency – driven not only by compliance, but by treaters seeking consistency, cost control and improved throughput. Across the sector, we’re seeing treaters place much greater emphasis on consistency and repeatability. It’s no longer enough
to meet the standard on paper—you need systems in place that deliver that result day in, day out.
DRIVING CONSISTENCY THROUGH PROCESS CONTROL Achieving reliable penetration and retention levels is fundamental to meeting treatment standards, yet variability in process control remains a challenge across many facilities. Modern plants are increasingly addressing this through enhanced monitoring and automation.
Automated control systems allow operators to manage treatment cycles with
far greater precision, reducing reliance on manual intervention. Parameters such as vacuum levels, pressure stages and cycle timing can be tightly controlled and recorded, ensuring repeatability from one batch to the next.
This level of control is most effective when systems are designed with the operator in mind –clear interfaces, intuitive controls, and the flexibility to adapt cycle parameters to different products and species. Where implemented well, it not only improves quality assurance but also provides a clear audit trail, supporting compliance and customer confidence.
