VARIETY TO SHARE

Tunneling is such an interesting industry and a business of many parts. It comes as the fulfilment of an economic dream, the underground solution to a problem facing society having risen rising to become the preferred option, especially when the finances also sit well and the risk is within reason. Before the dig, though, comes

the planning - visions of what may come to pass, in different forms and variations, even as the great unknown of the ground has yet to be probed, and then encountered, almost ready to thwart any plan, to some degree. In the construction stage, therefore, the design and buildability challenges demand further creativity. Once completed, there are assets

underground that are to be operated and in service, to deliver on the economic and social dreams. At each and all stages - from the

dreams and designs to the execution and operation - it is important to communicate, to share information. In this issue, we bring together

a variety of features that share information from different stages of the process of realizing underground dreams, whether they be upcoming

shows, courses, data on projects in development, reflections on the past and considerations of the future, and research on safety as well as views on using underground space. Much will be discussed at RETC

2025, taking place in June in Dallas, TX. A packed technical program awaits, which we preview. Trenchless tunneling will be the focus later this year, in October, when No-Dig North is in Vancouver, BC, and we are pleased to also place a spotlight on that show, too, which is also previewed in this issue. These follow the World Tunnel

Congress, where the gathering this year is in Sweden - and next time round will be in Canada. Before then, in education, the

renowned BTS Design & Construction course runs this summer in the UK, in late June. All are welcome. So many opportunities to share experience of tunneling.
