CITIES PREPARE FOR DELUGE
Anti-pollution laws and increasingly frequent violent rainstorms are driving many cities internationally to upgrade combined sewer systems that may be many decades old. Herrenknecht’s TBMs have recently been active on many such tunnel projects in the US, including the Clean Rivers Project in Washington, D.C., and a long and challenging outfall tunnel in Los Angeles
Combined sewers serving cities worldwide are conveying more than their original designers intended – and not in a good way. As urban populations grow and once-in-a-decade rainstorms become routine, combined sewer overflows (CSOs) are discharging more and more untreated wastewater into rivers, lakes and oceans.
