idway through 2023 the global hide market is still in a holding pattern, waiting for demand to pick up. Of course, without a healthier Chinese economy, it will be difficult for the market
to push significantly higher. As we noted in the previous issue, ACLE is back on track for this August and business at the fair could signal what the rest of the year holds.
Elsewhere in the world, each region faces its own challenges, which is nothing new. The important thing to remember is that the hide market is resilient and will find its way forward. Already, there are some indications that alternative materials are not necessarily performing as expected and some interest could be swinging back to leather. Most importantly, the opportunities for leather are increasing when it comes to circularity. We’ve written about the benefits of regenerative hides, but there’s also a bright future when it comes to recycled leather waste. In this issue, we take a look at how innovators are creating new value out of the four billion pounds of scrap leather generated annually. They’re harvesting it from post-consumer waste for new raw material too. New developments like these are what helps to push the leather sector forward as businesses and brands work to become more sustainable. Taking the waste from the processing of a by-product and transforming it into yet another new material that is a complement to virgin leather can help the entire sector regain market share.
