Argentina
Argentine slaughter was 1.17 million head in April, 9% less month-on-month and 11% more year-on-year. Adjusted
by business days, it was up by 5% and 17%, respectively. The trend is for higher slaughter with no major differences between males and females. In the first half of May, monthly slaughter was on track for a 15% year-on-year increase. Steers had a lower-than-average increase for the first time in quite some time, while heifers are indicating a year-on-year increase of 24%. From January through April 2023, Argentina exported 1.850 million wet-salted hides. From that amount in the four-month period, 79% of hides went to China. Raw material prices remained stable throughout June, with steers at $0.43 per kilo, cows at $0.29 and heifers at $0.48.
Australia
Wet-blue ox prices eased in the May/ June period after having risen in the first quarter of 2023. Grade A
selections at 23–27kg were selling $2.00 lower at US$53.00 per piece, and selections at 18–23kg were $3.00 lower at $45.00. Abundant cattle slaughter totals were affecting processors with spaces booking up nearly two months forward. A tight labour market was a significant factor in managing the large supply. Beef production and exports were both higher
in May. Shipments totalled 91,479t, an increase of 19,400t or 27% more than April, which was affected by four or five public holidays.
Bangladesh
On the eve of Eid ul-Adha, rawhide traders and farmers were expecting better prices from the sale of animal
skins. Tanners had settled a major portion of the arrears that accumulated over the past several years. Eid ul-Adha accounts for nearly half of the rawhide produced annually in Bangladesh and tanneries rely on local suppliers for the skins. Bangladesh’s leather and leather goods exports slightly increased from June 2022 to May 2023, to $1.120bn, up by just 0.42% from the previous year. Leather goods boosted the total, compensating for a drop in leather and footwear exports. Still, exports were 13.95% below the strategic target. Preliminary data from the Export Promotion

Bureau (EPB) show that in the same period of the previous year, leather and leather goods exports totalled $1.115bn. The country set a strategic target of $1.301bn for exports in the first 11 months of this year. The drop is blamed on declining demand in the European market.
Benelux
Bull prices in the Benelux area declined in late spring along with the rest of the market. Weights of 30–39kg
were selling at €0.95–1.00 per kilo and selections weighing 40–49kg were selling for a flat €1.00. Prices are for delivery to northern Italian tanneries on a 30-day payment plan.
