In terms of square metres, 12.1 million were shipped
in May, 7.7% higher than the same month last year, but 12.0% lower than April, when the total was 13.7 million square metres. The first five months of the year totalled US$466.3m, a decrease of 15.5% from the same period of 2022, but 8.0% more in commercialised areas, with 65.0 million square metres.

Brazilian raw material began a slow and steady decline. The average price of fresh hides fell by 23% (R$0.32)
since our last report to sell for R$1.07. The reference price of TR1 did not decline nearly as much due to persistent high costs. The price fell just US$0.04 to US$0.66 per square foot. Brazil’s exports of hides and skins in May totalled US$91.2m, down by 5.6% from April and 16.4% from the same month last year, when $109.1m were exported. The data was presented by the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (SECEX) of the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services and analysed by the CICB.

Data from the quarterly surveys by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) show that the total was 2.7% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2022. The slaughter of females increased by 17.9% compared with the first quarter of 2022, while the slaughter of males decreased by 3.8%. In mid-June, Curtume Minuano, next to Arroio Feitoria, was flooded by the cyclone that moved through Rio Grande do Sul. Inventory and machinery were covered in water and mud. Several machines used to treat leather were rendered unusable, but no workers were injured.
Colombia
Colombia’s raw material market remained stable thorough June. Salted hides weighing 26–28kg sold

for US$0.40 per kilo, while those at 30–32kg sold for US$0.50/kg. Wet–blue TR1/TR2 20/22mm-plus was also unchanged at US$0.42 per square foot. During the first quarter of 2023, cattle slaughter (760,300 head) grew by 1.7% compared with the same quarter in 2022. Female slaughter was up by 11.3% and that of males by 3.1%, while that of calves decreased by 37.5%. Slaughter for export fell by 53.9%, going from an equivalent of 55,373 head in the first quarter of 2022 to 25,522 head in the same quarter of 2023.

The 8–12kg luxury selections eased by €0.20 to €5.60–6.00. Prices are per kilogram, delivered to northern Italian tanneries on a 30-day payment plan.
