Raw materials


French cow prices remained weak throughout the spring and June. Central French 32kg and up were lower at the top end at €0.90–0.92. Lighter selections under 32kg dropped by €0.05 to €0.70–0.75. French Bretagne 32kg and under were down more significantly, selling at €0.85–0.90/kg. The 32kg and up selection dropped €0.05–0.15, selling at €1.00. After having seen increases earlier in the year, the French bull market took a downturn on weak demand. French Bretagne selections 37kg and up were selling €0.10–0.15 lower at €1.40–1.45. The under 37kg selection was steady at €1.25–1.30. Among central French hides, the 37kg and up was selling for €0.10 less at €1.20–1.30 and the 37kg and under category was also lower at €1.00.


Germany


German cow hide prices continued their downward trend into June. The 25kg and up north German cows were €0.10– 0.12 lower at €0.60–0.63/kg. Lighter weights of 15–24kg were selling at €0.70–0.85, which is a little softer at the low end. Cow hide prices in south Germany were in the same situation: 40kg and up selections traded €0.10 lower at €1.05–1.10/kg. The 30–39kg selections were lower too, selling at €0.85–0.88.


German heifer prices also continued to trend mostly downward. North German 25kg and up were lower at €0.80/kg and the price was €0.90 for the 15–24kg from the same region. South German heifers 40kg and up were at €1.20–1.25, and the 30–39kg selection was down €0.10 at €1.05. With regard to the German bull market, north German bull selections at 40.0–49.0kg settled at €1.05/kg. South German bulls remained steady at €1.40–1.45 for the 40–49kg selections.


Greece


Prices for lamb and sheep skins from Greece were lower by June. Sales of lamb skins (70/20/10) were


down $10.00 at $100.00–120.00 per dozen, pickled. Lamb skins (C2) also declined, selling for $40.00 to $45.00 per dozen, pickled.


Netherlands


After easing during the spring, Dutch vealskin sellers were in no hurry and didn’t need to lower prices any


further. The 12.5kg selections were selling at €4.30– 4.80. Skins at 16.5kg were at €5.20–5.60. Dutch cow


India


India’s buffalo market prices were stable through the late spring. Crust 1.4–1.6mm was trading at $0.65


per square foot. Crust 0.9–1.1mm was similarly unchanged at $0.55.


Domestic and export demand for tanneries in


Tamil Nadu dropped by 50% over the past two years due to the rising cost of materials, including leather processing chemicals and inflation in key markets. Data from Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) and Council for Leather Exports (CLE) shows leather, leather products and footwear exports from India to Hong Kong and Poland declined by 15% and 1.02% respectively from 2021–22 to 2022–23. Exports to the top 15 destinations show very little with just a couple of exceptions.


Iran


Iranian markets saw some declines in the price of mutton and goatskin selections. Mutton skins (AB)


remained flat at $130.00 per dozen, pickled. On the other hand, super mutton skins were $1.00 lower at $50.00. Prices on medium goat skins were weakened, settling at $12.15.


Italy


Italian cow sales were reported €0.10 lower at €0.50–0.55/kg at the end of June. Italian bull prices were also down,


selling at €0.95–1.00 for 40kg and up average green weight. With regard to Italian veal, prices came down from their earlier peaks. The 18kg and up was selling at €4.30–4.80/kg. Selections under 18kg were also a good deal lower at €3.70–4.20/kg.
