his year is turning out to be a bumpy road back to business as usual. China is working towards normality and ACLE is set to take place in Shanghai in August, but the overall economic picture for the leather industry is still fraught.

Demand is down as global economies work to stabilise inflation, calm political situations and stimulate consumer demand. The ripple effects have most global hide markets turning a little bearish and pushing expectations for improved demand to the second half of the year. This is challenging hide sellers to move inventories and keep prices level, even as the traditional sectors for leather have pulled back on buying. Leather is also meeting more competition from an increasing number of new materials. So, we were intrigued by the hypothesis that leather might be able to use some of those new materials to grow its own marketability and usage. The unlikely pairing of traditional leather and lab-grown materials may actually be key in the future. You never know what benefits innovation could bring until they are tried and tested. Perennially optimistic, we are considering the ups and downs of the 2023 market as the final throes of the post-pandemic period. The rhythms of business are more ‘normal’ than they were a year ago and we have no doubt they will return to a better state soon.
