Solutions for a clean and green new world

With the world waking up to the growing environmental concerns, governments and regulatory bodies are enforcing action through international treaties such as the Paris Agreement and the European Union’s Green Deal. But if businesses are to achieve the ambitious goal of being net zero by 2030, radical change will be required. Bengü Ceren Kurtalan, environmental specialist at Sintan Chemical Corporation, outlines the steps her company is taking to contribute to climate action.

T

he Paris Agreement makes compliance with the targets of the European Union’s (EU) Green Deal indispensable for businesses all over the world. Together with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the Emissions Trading System (ETS) that are already in place, the EU demands to set and achieve net zero by two critical turning points (the years 2030 and 2050) in order to remedy the climate crisis. The most current issue to harmonise within the scope of climate change is the EU’s Green Deal. With this ambitious target of being carbon neutral by 2050, radical change will be required within businesses and traditional economic growth models. This change will need to integrate green and clean production models and place both corporate and product carbon footprint reporting right in the middle of production and recruiting activities.

The company, which is designed with full automation and operates based on zero waste principles, continues to be a solution partner to the leather sector, following the brand’s promise of “we are the solution” since 2006. By including environmental and social projects in its production capacity and economic growth, the business is dedicated to adding value to the world and its stakeholders. With the carbon footprint studies initiated in 2021, Sintan has spent a great effort towards being a solution partner for its stakeholders for sustainable production and supply chain. It remains in constant communication with all partners and together they monitor global developments. Considering corporate carbon footprint calculations, Sintan carries out continuous research studies with “hot spot” analyses made by its research and development

department. While increasing its efficiency with renewable energy investments, the company aims to alleviate its impact on nature.

Compliance and Cooperation With its regulatory and compliance team, which carries out work within the organisation, Sintan fulfils its legal

obligations and undertakes studies on the issues affecting our environment with the utmost care.

The company is proud to have completed the ZDHC MRSL Level 3 compliance process and is committed to zero discharge of hazardous chemicals, following the ZDHC process. It is a strong supporter of sustainable chemistry and the elimination of hazardous chemicals. Sintan is carrying out the necessary studies to meet the requirements of the EU to limit bisphenols at set rates and prohibit free bisphenols in certain areas. In this process, Sintan’s research and development team continues to work at full speed to add more bisphenol-free chemicals to its production line. The company is dedicated to being transparent about its bisphenols values to stakeholders and the wider industry. Among its targets for 2023, the keywords of metal-free, bisphenol-free and chrome- free are frequently included. Sintan will play an active role in the green transformation process with the Green Transformation Commission established within the body of BASFED (the Federation of Western Anatolian Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Associations) and chaired by its CEO, Kenan Mazıcı. Within the Sintan team, it will lead the commission – which is one of the most important and attentive examples of industry, public and university cooperation – and aims to guide the EU Green Deal process in Turkiye.

Sintan will maintain its procedures to serve the new and the good every day by acting in unity with the changing world conditions. ●
