INDIAN WOOD-BASED PANELS’ SECTOR SHOWS POSITIVE
DYNAMICS THIS YEAR
India has been a bright spot on the international wood-based panels investment front in recent years. WBPI contributor Eugene Gerden gives a latest update on the India market.
T
he Indian wood-based panels’ sector shows positive dynamics this year thanks
to the ongoing growth of the Indian national economy, which is fuelled by the supply of cheap Russian oil. A significant growth of oil supplies from Russia in recent years has become one of the main factors which has contributed to the growth of the Indian construction sector and some related industries, including the segment of wood-based panels in recent years. In terms of structure of the market, since the beginning of 2020s MDF remains the fastest-growing and most promising segment of the Indian boards market, accounting for the bulk of investments from major players.
Aaditya Sharda, a co-founder of Infra. Market, a leading building materials
platform, recently told an interview with the Entrepreneur magazine, that India’s wood panel industry is growing rapidly, driven by rising demand for sustainable and versatile materials like MDF. Currently the demand for MDF and particleboard in India is steadily growing being mostly driven by the local real estate sector. Most local analysts expect the growth will continue, and will mainly take place at the expense of the plywood sector. According to Vaidyanathan Hariharan, secretary of the Indian Wood Technologist Association, at present the industry consists of about 5,000 factories, 60% of which are companies of small and medium size. Still, despite this, the industry is dominated by several major players, which concentrate large production and financial resources within their structures.
In recent years many of them have
completed technical modernization, which involved the transfer of some important manufacturing technologies from European countries to their facilities. That involved participation of some major Western players, including Andritz, Dieffenbacher and some others, which have significantly strengthened their positions in the Indian market in recent years by supplying their systems and equipment to some leading local players. As for Andritz, the country has long experience of co-operation with CenturyPly, one of India’s largest MDF producers, as it delivered its pressurized refining system for the company’s MDF plants a while ago. At present the list of major Indian
wood-based panel producers includes such companies as Greenpanel Industries, Century
