Tagliamento Local Economic Development Consortium reached an agreement for the land acquisition where the factory will be built. Environmental group the ABC Committee had led objections, claiming that the project would lead to a 30% increase in fine particle emissions in San Vito – a claim which was ultimately rejected. The lengthy process is believed to have added substantially to project costs. Massimo Cenedella, general manager of Kronospan Italia, was quoted in Italia media reports:

“We are now calm and motivated, and thanks also to Confindustria Alto Adriatico and the Ponterosso Consortium, we are moving forward and pursuing our goals. We will launch the project quickly, starting with a rail link.”

So, the long-running saga appears to

be over and a project that was originally envisaged to be completed by the end of 2024 looks more likely to start soon and be finished within the next two years. The second project is Saviola’s plan for a new PB plant at its Viadana site in northern Italy. It is WBPI’s understanding that this

delayed project is still envisaged, so it remains in our list of future capacities. But no concrete update is yet forthcoming on a project start date. Saviola, an expert in the use of recycled

wood, was in the news last year for its investment moves in Germany by taking a majority ownership of German producer Rheinspan.

Xilopan, the Italian particleboard manufacturer, shuttered production earlier in 2025 after deciding its panel manufacturing was uncompetitive in the current economic environment.
