Turbine developments | Aiming for 100% NH3

GE Vernova’s Gas Power business and IHI Corporation have signed a joint development agreement (JDA) with the aim of further progressing towards development of a new gas turbine combustor capable of using ammonia for power generation, compatible with GE Vernova’s 6F.03, 7F and 9F gas turbines.

This collaboration is a follow-up to earlier MOUs between the companies and builds upon IHI’s successful development of a 2 MW gas turbine using 100% liquid ammonia. This first- of-its-kind project reduced greenhouse gases, including nitrous oxide (N2O), by more than 99%, IHI says.

“Following two years of joint studies on the economics of the ammonia value chain, we are now thrilled to ink a new chapter in our collaboration with IHI and proceed to the next phase of technology and engineering as agreed in our Ammonia Roadmap to develop decarbonisation pathways that can future-proof existing investments in power generation,” said Jeffrey Goldmeer, GE Vernova director of hydrogen value chain. “With GE Vernova’s expertise in engineering and manufacturing of

Doosan Škoda Power has signed a contract to supply a steam turbine for a waste to energy power plant in the USA. This will be Doosan Škoda Power’s first project outside Europe with waste facility operator Covanta.

“This new contract is an important reference for Doosan Škoda Power and a major milestone in entering a complex and dynamic market,” said Josef Talhofer, Area Sales Manager for the North America for Doosan Škoda Power. The project will see Covanta partnering with the end customer, Pasco County, Florida, to invest in expanding the capacity of a waste to energy plant located in Spring Hill, Florida (pictured). The plant expansion, will increase the total waste processed by 131 500 tonnes per year.

For this project, Doosan Škoda Power is supplying a standardised single-case turbine, DST-G10, with a gross power output of 15 MW, together with a generator and auxiliary equipment meeting US standards.

gas turbine combustion systems and balance of plant systems, and IHI’s know-how in ammonia combustion technology, we’ll be focused on the technological development and technical deliverables, aiming for the validation of the combustion technology in the next two years, and a commercially available product by 2030.” In this engineering phase, combustion technology concepts will be evaluated for their ability to meet key operational requirements and their impact on the entire power plant. GE Vernova and IHI plan to develop a two- stage combustor configured to burn up to 100% ammonia and compliant with emission requirements. Combustion testing will take place in IHI’s facilities in Japan.

In addition to new build applications, the new combustor is expected to offer a path for decarbonising existing gas turbine power plants. Without replacing the existing gas turbine, power plants operating on conventional fuels could be upgraded to operate on a fuel that does not produce carbon dioxide emissions when combusted by simply changing the natural gas combustor to the new ammonia combustor,

with minimum upgrades to the fuel system and associated balance of plant systems. As anticipated in the October 2023 three- way MOU between Sembcorp, IHI, and GE Vernova, the plan is to explore the potential for ammonia combustor retrofitting at Sembcorp’s Sakra power plant in Singapore, which uses GE Vernova’s 9F gas turbine. The project would, among other things, bolster industry confidence in the development of an ammonia value chain in Singapore.

“This joint development agreement with GE Vernova marks a milestone in decarboniswation towards a more sustainable future with the creation of an ammonia value chain,” “Among the various hydrogen carriers, ammonia represents a truly viable pathway to decarbonisation for fuel importers like Japan,” said Kensuke Yamamoto, IHI VP of business development and GM of ammonia value chain project department. “Ammonia is characterised by high volumetric hydrogen density and has well-established handling infrastructure deployed globally. IHI’s ammonia combustion technologies can enable the direct use of ammonia as a carbon neutral fuel”

GT36 news

As part of the FLEX4H2 project, Ansaldo Energia has successfully demonstrated the ability of a hydrogen-optimised combustor for the GT36 gas turbine to operate on 100% hydrogen fuel. The sequential combustion technology employed in the GT36 achieved flexible operation from 0 to 100% hydrogen in high pressure tests, the company notes.

The successful testing of the GT36 combustor prototypes took place at a dedicated test facility in Cologne, Germany. The tests highlighted the combustor’s ability to seamlessly switch between natural gas and hydrogen, demonstrating fuel and operational flexibility. Sequential combustion technology “enables the GT36 to operate on a wide range of hydrogen/natural gas blends, ensuring its adaptability to the continuously evolving needs of current and future power generation markets,” said Ansaldo Energia. This achievement marks “a fundamental technology milestone for large heavy duty gas turbines”, says Ansaldo Energia.

Ansaldo Energia has also recently reported

that the first GT36-equipped power plant in China has entered commercial operation. Installed in the Minhang Industrial Zone, Shanghai, this SPIC (State Power Investment Corporation Limited) power plant is an integral part of a project that aims to transform the site of a former coal-fired power plant into a low emissions energy hub. The existing AE94.3A gas turbine at the site “complements the GT36”, says Ansaldo Energia, which is “confident that this project will pave the way for further collaborations with Chinese partners.”

AE94.2s for Almaty rebuild

Under a contract signed in February, Ansaldo Energia is supplying two AE94.2 gas turbines, two generators and associated auxiliary services for the Alamaty CHPP-3 reconstruction project in Kazakhstan, which will see provision of a modern natural gas fuelled combined cycle plant.

The signature followed a production line capacity reservation in 2023 enabling rapid delivery times and a co-operation agreement signed on 18 January 2024 between Ansaldo Energia and Samruk Energy (Kazakh state power company) promoting CCGT projects in Kazakhstan.
