RJM wins burner upgrade project in Turkey
RJM International has been awarded a major engineering burner upgrade project to improve the performance of Unit 3 at Zetes 2, a 615 MW utility power plant of Eren Enerji located at Zonguldak, Turkey. The plant work will focus on improving boiler efficiency, thermal performance and reducing emissions.
Following a detailed site survey, combustion audit and associated CFD analysis, RJM developed an innovative solution which will include the provision of 24 ‘bespoke’ RJM burners. The new equipment will be installed during the planned outage in spring / summer 2024.
Enerji commented: “We are glad to
collaborate with RJM for executing the improvement project based on combustion efficiency and lower emission levels. It is also in our plan to expand the project for our other units to continue sustainable and reliable power generation.” The Zetes power units, with outputs making 2790 MW in total, are all owned and operated by Eren Enerji, a leading power generation company with almost 7% of Turkish total electricity production. It is part of Eren Holding, a Turkish conglomerate. RJM is currently delivering performance upgrade projects at utility generators in the USA and Asia-Pacific, as well as at biomass and Energy from Waste facilities in the UK and Italy.
Hybrid power plant controller
GreenPowerMonitor, a DNV Company, has launched its new Hybrid Power Plant Controller (GPM Hybrid PPC). It is described as an advanced controller, able to ‘shake up hybrid plant management’ by effectively meeting grid codes in all the markets it serves.
Unlike traditional renewable power plant installations, such as photovoltaic or battery energy storage system (BESS) plants that rely on a single power source, hybrid sites introduce a new level of complexity. The GPM Hybrid PPC makes use of the unique characteristics of both PV and BESS, combining the strictly one-directional power of PV with the storage flexibility of BESS. This is said to allow for a multitude of services and requirements, and, importantly, help plants avoid grid saturation situations by distributing the energy produced throughout the day. At the heart of the hybrid PPC is
GreenPowerMonitor’s Power Plant Controller software service, which ensures grid compliance at the point of interconnection, thus enabling seamless integration with transmission system operators. By intelligently distributing the required active power between the PV plant and the BESS, the PPC can guarantee optimal performance while meeting the stringent transmission and distribution grid constraints are emerging as the key bottleneck for renewable electricity expansion and related distributed energy assets such as grid-connected storage and EV charging points in many regions. “In countries with high renewable penetration, the grid connection point and permit are often the costliest elements when building a renewable
Cushman II hydro plant life extended by 100 years
GE Vernova’s Hydro Power business has been selected by Tacoma Power to refurbish two 27 MW/33 MVA turbine and generator units at the Cushman II hydropower plant. There are three units installed at the site. The scope of work includes the design, manufacturing, refurbishment, installation and commissioning of two new generator stators and refurbishment of generator rotor poles, shaft thrust bearing, as well as two new turbine
distributors and refurbishment of turbine runner and draft tube.
Located in Mason County, Washington, USA, the 81 MW Cushman II hydropower plant was commissioned in 1930. The upgrade is expected to be completed in 2026. The refurbishment/ upgrade of the units should help increase availability and reliability for the power plant and deliver more renewable energy to the grid for another 100 years.

energy plant. The best way to maximise permitting is to combine complementary production profiles, such as PV + Wind, PV + GreenPowerMonitor, and executive VP for Energy Systems at DNV. “Furthermore, GPM Hybrid PPC considers the manufacturer’s recommendations for device control, ensuring extended device lifespan and increased overall profitability. It also adheres to the grid code of the country where it is installed, ensuring compliance and seamless integration”, he added.
GPM Hybrid PPC is said to offer flexibility for quick integration, the ability to re-use developments for continuous improvement, and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of the sector and modifications of the network code, and can be implemented in numerous countries with varying requirements.
