COMMENT Ӏ MAY 2024
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
Positive collaboration is a theme that occurs multiple times in this issue. On the jobsite, for example, collaboration between contractor and crane rental firm is key. See our Job of the Month (p8) for a prime example of this with regards to selecting and positioning multiple tower cranes on a Dutch building site. Elsewhere, in our ‘Europe focus’ feature (p36), cooperation, education and dialogue are the ‘call to arms’. The feature looks at how UK crane hire companies are currently suffering severely restricted operations due to inconsistent and uninformed regulations imposed by different police and council authorities around the country. John Sutch, MD of John Sutch Cranes, has put out a 'call to the table' to help resolve the issue. Sutch’s sentiments are supported by UK building trade association NFB which says there’s a lack of national standards and that regs are being interpreted willy-nilly by uninformed decision makers.

Hopefully the progress that's been made by ESTA with reforms to the EU's Weights and Dimensions Directive, along with the progress made by the Canadian Crane Rental Association in regarding reforms to weight restrictions for all terrain cranes in Alberta, Canada (see News p12), provides encouragement to UK crane and abnormal transport firms currently facing these inconsistent travel restrictions, showing that positive change can be bought about through collaboration, education and discussion. The CCRA is understandably proud of what it has achieved.
"The recent changes to Weights & Dimensions Regulations for all terrain cranes in British Columbia demonstrate the power of association," it says. "One member alone could not initiate the province-wide changes; but together, we could."
